The Wilmington High School Varsity Girls Tennis team competed in the Div. I sectional tennis tournament at the Princeton High School tennis courts on Monday. For the first time in school history, a varsity girls tennis team member competed in the Div. I sectional tournament fourth round. Following a first-round bye, Marci Sodini defeated Baker of Loveland 6-3, 6-3 in the second round. She then won by defeault over Williams of Winton Woods before falling to the No. 2 seeded caroline Pittman of Lakota East. “Marci played a strong match against Caroline Pitman of Lakota East,” WHS varsity coach Jeri Earley said. “She had a number of tremendous shots and played Caroline very competitively. She should feel quite successful.”
Taylor Massie defeated Still of Hamilton 6-1, 6-1 and then was defeated by No. 4 seed Brandalike of Little Miami 6-2, 6-3. “Taylor played a tremendous match with Brandalike. Taylor was actually ahead of Brandalike at one point in the match 3-2 and then eventually lost a tough match,” Earley said. Megan Sorenson lost to Roberson of Hamilton 6-3, 2-6, 1-6 in a hard-fought match. “Megan had a number of great shots against her opponent,” Earley said. Leanne Parrish and Sara Horsley defeated Wallace and Cunningham of Winton Woods 6-2, 6-3 and then lost a really tough match to Wilson and Brown of Princeton 7-6, 3-6, 0-6, Earley said. “Leanne and Sara played very well on Monday their doubles performance was quite strong, both serving and many tremendous shots that were key in their success,” the coach pointed out. Lindsey Brickles and Megan Hayslip lost to the No. 3 seeded team of Patel and Zahng of Sycamore 6-0, 6-0. Said Earley, “Lindsey and Megan continued to show improvement.” Last week, the Lady Hurricane competed in the FAVC tournament. Marci Sodini defeated Chelsea Foster of Turpin 6-0, 6-0 in singles play. The second round was a tremendous match between Ellie Hays of Kings, Earley said. The match lasted almost 3 1/2 hours and Sodini eventually lost, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. “It was an amazing match with many, many points going back and forth for at least 20 or more points,” said Earley. Sodini continued to play strong and went on to defeat Alex Smith of Amelia 8-2 to finish third in the FAVC at No. 1 singles. Massie lost to Jose Wittwer of Turpin 6-1, 6-1 and then defeated Melvin of Amelia 8-0 to place fifth in the FAVC at No. 2 singles. Sorenson lost to Walnut Hills 6-1, 6-0 and then lost to Amelia 8-1 in No. 3 singles play. Parrish and Horsley defeated an Amelia team 6-4, 6-2 in the first round. During the second round, they were defeated by Turpin 6-1, 6-0 and in the backdraw lost to Kings 8-1 placing fourth in the FAVC at No. 1 doubles. Brickles and Hayslip lost a close match to Little Miami 7-5, 6-4 and then lost to Amelia 8-6 at second doubles. The last regular season match was Sept. 23 at Hamilton with WHS coming out on top, 5-0. In singles play, Sodini defeated Andrea Gillia 6-0, 6-0; Massie defeated Jesiko Still 6-2, 6-1; and Sorenson defeated Anna Forsythe 6-3, 6-3. In doubles play, Parrish and Horsley defeated Madeline Kinsey and Katherine Pegurrero 6-0, 6-1; and Brickles and Hayslip defeated Elyse Swanson and Cara Jrachini 6-1, 6-0. “It was a great win for the entire team as we ended our regular season with an overall record of 7-9,” Earley said. The girls individual records for the season are: 1st Singles Marci Sodini is 3-2 in FAVC and 17-7 overall. 2nd Singles Taylor Massie is 2-3 in FAVC and 13-10 overall. 3rd Singles Megan Sorensen is 0-4 in FAVC and 2-13 overall. 1st Doubles Leanne Parrish and Sara Horsley 0-3 in FAVC and 7-10 overall. 2nd Doubles Megan Hayslip and Lindsey Brickles 2-3 in FAVC and 6-13 overall.
