MONROE — The Wilmington High School softball team suffered a tough loss to Lemon-Monrow, 13-0, on Thursday.
Wilmington falls to 1-6 on the season. “The positive thing about the game is this is a learning experience,” said WHS head coach Willie McClure. “The girls really learned how important a team is. I want to commend Chelsea Jones. She came in as an emergency pitcher and we knew that she might struggle. Our girls have to realize this is a team sport and no matter who is on the mound you have to play defense and hit the ball. “Although the score might look bad, it isn’t as bad as it seems. I think the girls will take this loss and learn from it. We have a lot of defensive fundamentals to work on. This is one of those games that I as a coach … I didn’t prepare my team well enough mentally going into this game. We knew Stephanie (Byrne) wasn’t going to pitch and we would have to step up. I don’t think they understood that and I have to relay that to the team. It was a learning experience for all of us. Lemon-Monroe is a very good team, so I give them credit for what they did.” Making hits for WHS were Byrne and LaRae Law. WHS returns to action 5 p.m. today at Edgewood.
