WILMINGTON — The Wilmington High School softball team fell 7-5 in eight innings to Amelia in Fort Ancient Valley Conference action on Wednesday.

WHS is now 1-5 on the season and 1-3 in the FAVC.

“Their resilience is unbelievable at this point. Every game they are battling and they don’t give up. We made some defensive errors early in the game, but they kept that spirit. They know they can come back and one pitch at a time they make something happen,” said WHS head coach Willie McClure. “We finally got some timely hits that helped us out. I can’t say enough about everyone on this team - their heart, determination, their resilience after coming back whether it be making an error or whatever. They let that play go and that shows maturity. They are growing up quickly.”

Freshman Stephanie Byrne took the loss on the mound going the distance in the contest.

“Stephanie pitched her third game in a row and pitched all eight innings. It is a team effort and the team rallies behind her. We are starting to get a personality and I like it because it is a team that never dies. They never quit. They are only getting better each time out. they are learning what they can do and what they need to do,” said the coach.

WHS returns to action today at Lemon-Monroe.
