WILMINGTON — The Wilmington High School boys soccer team picked up a strong come-from-behind 3-2 win over Little Miami to open Fort Ancient Valley Conference action on Thursday.
WHS is now 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in the league. WHS opened scoring with 15 minutes left in the first half when David Duquette hit Kyle Imhulse for a score. Imhulse was able to chip the goalkeeper to put WHS up 1-0. WHS took the 1-0 lead into the half. “Both teams had some chances. it was a high intensity first half,” said WHS head coach Jeff Wiederhold. In the second half, Little Miami scored two quick goals 6 and 8 minutes in to take a 2-1 lead. “I was very proud of the team where they kept their composure and fought back,” said the coach. The key play in the game came with 26 left in the half. Senior Michael Graham got tackled in the box and set up a penalty kick that Jacob Spirk converted to tie the game. “It was a back and forth frantic pace then. Both teams had their shots and had chances to score. We had a couple of breakaways we just missed and they had some corner kick opportunities,” said Wiederhold. The Hurricane, however was able to convert. With 3:26 Zeb Mabry passed the ball to Imhulse who passed it on to Spirk for the winning goal. “That play was typical of what we talked about before the game. We said it had to be all 11 players out on the field working at the same time for us to win. We have to be one unit, play with intensity and play with heart. Even though we got down 2-1 we never gave up,” Widerhold said. The Hurricane returns to action Saturday at Hillsboro. Add as favourites (17) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 1098
