By CHRIS HOPPES Brown News Service WASHINGTON C.H. — The Wilmington Lady Hurricane picked up a hard-earned road victory at Washington Senior High School Monday night, 48-44, over the Lady Lions in overtime.
Washington (4-5) held a 25-15 halftime lead over the ‘Cane (8-2). Washington had a tough, costly night at the free throw line, making just 11 of 21 for 52 percent. Washington had a chance to notch the win with a free throw with no time on the clock at the end of regulation, but missed two throws, forcing the overtime period. Junior Chelsea Earley led all scorers for Wilmington with 21 points. Freshman Amina Affini scored 17 points. For the Lady Lions, Anna Frazier led with 13 points. Washington led at the end of the first quarter, 9-6. The Lady Lions increased their lead to 25-15 at the half. “We made a couple of adjustments at halftime,” Wilmington head coach Butch Hooper said. “I don’t think we were playing very aggressive early, especially defensively. “I thought their guards might be too quick for us to handle, so we backed it off. Our freshman (Affini) did a nice job for us. And Chelsea (Earley) shot the ball well. “Court House has a good team, they really do. Frazier just drove us crazy in the first half. We did a better job on her in the second half. Honesty, I think we just wore them down a little bit. Hooper explained Wilmington was without two of its players due to injury — Lindsey Crowe and Caitlyn Craycraft. “This was a big win for us,” Hooper said. The third quarter saw a reversal of fortune for Wilmington with a 14-7 third quarter making it 32-29 Washington after three. Washington led by as many six points in the fourth quarter before Wilmington began whittling down the deficit. Washington held a 40-38 lead with 25 seconds left. Coming out of a time out, Wilmington got the ball to Affini who made the layup to tie the game. Washington had the timeout with 8.4 seconds left. The Lady Lions had a shot for the win, but missed. The rebounder was fouled. With no time on the clock, and all the players pulled back from the lane, the two foul shots were missed, sending the game into overtime. Wilmington had a good start in the overtime as Marci Sodini scored nine seconds in. Ross hit a free throw for Washington and Earley hit a three-point shot for a 45-41 lead. The teams traded empty possessions until Frazier hit a free throw for Washington with 53 seconds left. Wilmington helped keep Washington’s hopes alive, missing four straight at the line at one point in the OT. With 23 seconds left, Affini hit a free throw to make it 46-42. Washington turned it over and Sodini hit a free throw for a five-point Wilmington lead. Ross scored for Washington and the Lady Lions called timeout with 7.9 seconds left. Washington applied maximum pressure, but Wilmington got the timeout just after inbounding the ball. Gabby Brown was then fouled and made one of two free throws for what proved to be the final, 48-44. Washington is back in SCOL action Thursday at home against Hillsboro. Wilmington’s next game is Saturday in the FAVC against Cincinnati Turpin.
