KETTERING — In what Wilmington head coach Mike Noszka called as disappointing a performance as he’s seen at Wilmington, the Hurricane lost 60-40 to defending Georgia AAAA champion Lithonia Miller Grove Monday in the Flyin’ to the Hoop invitational at Fairmont’s Trent Arena.

“We’re playing in a venue like this and we’re coaching effort in the second half,” Noszka said. “We need to go forward. Now, we’re going backwards.”

Miller Grove (11-6) opened the second half with a 14-3 run on the strength of eight second-chance points to extend its 26-21 halftime lead to 40-24. The Wolverines led 44-28 heading into the final period.

The much taller Georgia squad, which started three players 6-8 or bigger and brought three more 6-5 players off the bench, outrebounded Wilmington 40-20 for the game.

“(Miller Grove) wasn’t bigger than (Christ High School) Saturday. We were outrebounded (Saturday) just 27-25,” Noszka said. “I attribute all of it (tonight) to not boxing out.”

The Wolverines led by as much as 56-35 with 3:06 left in the contest.

Justin Colvin came off the bench to lead Miller Grove with 13 points. Henry Brooks added 10.

Quinten Rollins led Wilmington (8-3) with 14 points. Malcolm Heard, who played all 32 minutes, and Nyles Williams had 10 each.

Wolverine subs outscored the Wilmington bench 26-0.

Wilmington fell behind early 4-0 but came back to take a 12-11 lead a minute into the second period.

There were six lead changes and from that point until halftime.

The Wolverines sandwiched three-pointers around two Williams free throws in the final minute of the second quarter to take a 26-21 margin into the intermission.

“Our defense was good enough to stay in the game in the first half,” Noszka said. “We got good shots, but you have to put the ball in the basket.”

The Hurricane shot 31 percent from the field for the game, including 3-of-20 from behind the arc. It was 8-of-23 from the field in the first half, including 2-of-10 from three-point range.

So coach Noszka is disappointed in the effort? This from a team who had to play a league game Friday night, travel to BFE to play Saturday, and then play again on Monday? I'll bet he made them practice Sunday just to keep them "fresh"!
