Challenging schedule awaits 09-10 Hurricane boys basketball team

Coming off one of the best boys basketball seasons in Wilmington High School history, the Hurricane will play in three national-level tournaments during the 2009-2010 season.

Last season, Wilmington played Zanesville in the Scholastic Play By Play Classic at the Schottenstein Center at Ohio State. The Hurricane make a return trip to the PBP event against Columbus DeSales on Jan. 23.

Prior to that event, however, Wilmington will play in the Ohio vs USA National Hoops Classic in Wellston and the Flyin’ To The Hoops event in Kettering.

“Our kids want to compete against the best,” WHS head coach Mike Noszka said. “We feel we have the talent.

“People in Wilmington enjoy seeing these (types of teams) come to our gym and play.”

On Jan. 16, Wilmington will face Christ High School out of North Carolina in the National Hoops Classic in Wellston. Noszka said the Christ team was one of the best in the country a year ago.

On Jan. 18, Wilmington will play in the Flyin’ To The Hoop event at Trent Arena at Fairmont High School in Kettering. Noszka said the opponent has yet to be determined. In years past, the FTTH event has drawn teams of a national scope.

“I feel our schedule helped us going into the (post-season) tournament last year,” Noszka said. “We’ve had some success the last two years and a lot of these people are calling us.”

The Hurricane home schedule this season includes meetings with Dayton Dunbar, Lakota West and Hillsboro, in addition to the Fort Ancient Valley Conference Cardinal Division foes. Wilmington will travel to Cincinnati Elder and Centerville.

Aside from the high caliber opponent the Hurricane will be facing, Noszka said the opponents in all 20 games offer a myriad of styles to play against.

In addition to the regular season schedule, Noszka said the Wilmington summer schedules includes meetings with Westerville North, Toledo St. John, Dublin Coffman, Graham, Moeller, Lakota East and Cincinnati LaSalle.
