MOWRYSTOWN — Elysia Setty gained her second victory of the season, as the senior pitcher dominated the batters of West Union, striking out 10, en route to a 6-2 Whiteoak victory on Tuesday night.
Setty controlled the flow of the game from start to finish, as she threw 86 pitches, 74 for strikes. The senior was charged with two runs, but both were unearned, as both base runners reached via errors in the field. Setty also allowed four hits and no walks in the game. "Elysia (Setty) did a good job today," Whiteoak coach Angie Wright said. "She had nice control and threw strikes. She stepped up, keeping the hitters behind for most of the game." Whiteoak (2-0, 2-0) was held scoreless in the first two innings, but came out in the third scoring three runs, with fundamental play. Scoring runs in the third were Chelby Roades, who scored from a sacrifice bunt by Emily Tolliver. Also scoring runs in the inning were Kasey Sosby and Kandice Creamer. "We started slow as we were swinging late, but the girls adjusted and hit the ball much better later in the game," Wright said. The Lady 'Cats came right back in the fourth, when Kayla Seip crushed a triple into the outfield, scoring Skye Lucas to make the score 4-0. Leading by four runs, Setty continued to keep the West Union hitters at bay in the top half of the fifth. In the bottom half of the inning, the Lady 'Cats scored two more runs, with Amber Frazier and Roades. Lucas led WHS at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. The Lady Dragons continued to play hard, scoring two runs in the final inning, as Mia Hayslip and Cary Colvin scored runs for West Union. The loss was charged to Thomnessa Fields. "We can't continue to allow unearned runs," Wright said. "We need to stay more focused until the game is over." Whiteoak's next game will be today, as the Lady 'Cats rescheduled their game with Hillsboro to May 7 (originally scheduled for today), in order to play Southern Hills League foe Eastern Brown in a makeup game from last week at Eastern. The game will begin at 5 p.m.
