Wayne Trace defeats Kalida; moves onto regionals

ELIDA – The Wayne Trace Raiders captured a Division IV District Championship Friday night with a solid 56-36 victory over the Kalida Wildcats.

The game was nip-n-tuck for the entire first half, as neither team could post a substantial advantage. Kalida opened the contest with a 10-9 lead after one stop, but then Wayne Trace won the second eight minutes of action 13-12 to tie the score at the break at 22-all. The Raiders then got their offense untracked in the second half, out-pointing Kalida 18-6 in the third stanza to take command of the game. With the Kalida faithful in shock, the Raiders then sealed the deal with a 16-8 run in the final eight minutes of action. Wayne Trace was led by three double-digit performers, as Dane Treece led the charge with 20 points, while teammates Riley Linder and Alex LaBounty tallied 10 points apiece. Ryan Davis and Aaron Hockenberry added eight and six points, respectively for the Raiders’ cause also. The Wayne Trace defense handcuffed Kalida scorers to single-digit points in the contest. Justin Kahle and Jordan Basinger led Kalida in the setback with nine and eight markers, respectively. Wayne Trace will now play GMC-rival Ayersville in the Division IV Regional Semi-Finals at Bowling Green State University on Tuesday. Game time will be approximately 8:00 p.m.
