VERSAILLES - Versailles and Covington are two of the area’s best Division III wrestling teams, and the squads meet in the annual dual match between the programs, before the storm, on Thursday night.

In the typical close match, Covington nipped the V-Tigers 34-29.

Posting match wins for Versailles were six different grapplers, with Seth Davis recording a pin at 112 to lead the way. Drew Trump won at 140 by a close decision, Thomas Fullenkamp won by techical fall at 152, and Luke Schlater won by a decision at 189 pounds.

Both Joe Brandt (171) and Andrew Smith (285) won by forfeits.

Winning by pin for Covington was Sam Angle (125) and Andrew Dehart (145). Taking decisions for the Buccs were Brock Smith (103), Kyler Deeter (130), Brandon Flora (135), Aaron Devenport (160), and Josh Shefbuch (215). Matt Breisch of Covington won by forfeit at 119 pounds.

Head varsity wrestling coach A. J. Bey of Versailles is scheduled to take his team to the Celina Invitational on Saturday in the Celina Fieldhouse.

The day’s wrestling was originally scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m., but moved back to noon because of the weather. It could even be moved to Sunday if the conditions merit a furhter delay.

Versailles is scheduled to compete in the rescheduled junior high, junior varsity and varsity dual match Tuesday night against Greenville in the Greenville high school gymnasium.

On Sat., Feb. 13, Versailles will compete in the Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC) match with Coldwater and Delphos St. John’s.
