VAN WERT - The VW Legion traveled to a very tough tourney in Pemberville this past weekend. Even though the locals did not end up on top, the youthful players earned some valuable playing time against some of the better baseball teams in the state.

Local ACME baseball sectional:

VAN WERT - The local ACME sectional tourney started Tuesday night with two games on tap. Van Wert defeated Delphos St. John's 13-9 in one contest, while Delphos Jefferson run-ruled Lincolnview 11-1 in the other contest.

VW 13, DSJ 9

VW used a five-run second inning to jump to a big lead, only to see their counterparts from Delphos respond with five runs of their own in the third stanza. Brock Thatcher's bases-clearing double provided the big hit for the Cougars in the second, while Jordan Rode's bases-clearing double tallied three runs for St. John's in the third. The Jays went onto take an 8-5 lead before VW responded with the go-ahead runs. Austin Anderson's two-RBI triple, followed by Brady Dunlap's two-RBI double along with a three-RBI double by Brock Bell, provided all the offense VW needed to seal the deal in this one. Miller pitched the first three innings for the Cougars allowing nine runs (six earned) on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Putman was awarded the win for VW, going the final three innings and allowing no runs on two hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Hemker went the first four innings for the Blue Jays in absorbing the setback, allowing 12 runs (seven earned) on 13 hits with two walks, a hit batter and six strikeouts. Begfeld went the final two innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with two walks and one strikeout. The Cougars (8-9) now advance to Thursday's 5:00 p.m. game between the winner of Wednesday's Delphos Jefferson/Crestview showdown - Crestview had a bye in the first round for being the number one-seeded team. The Blue Jays will take the tournament field again on Wednesday against Lincolnview at 7:15 p.m. at Smiley Park in the consolation bracket of the double-elimination tourney.

DJ 11, LV 1

The Delphos Jefferson Wildcats run-ruled Lincolnview 11-1 in five innings Tuesday, to advance to Wednesday's 5:00 p.m. showdown with top-seeded Crestview. The loss drops the Lancers (4-6) into a do-or-die elimination game with Delphos St. John's, Wednesday, following the Crestview/Jefferson game. Jefferson's big eight-run second inning propelled the Wildcats to the "W", their first of the summer season. Jefferson (1-10) was led at the plate by Matt Antalis (RBI double) and Sean Fisher (RBI double). Lincolnview was led by Caleb Girod (RBI single). Fisher picked up the win for the Wildcats going all five innings. He allowed just the one run on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Jordan Simpson picked up the loss, going the first 3.1 innings. He allowed nine runs (six earned) on 11 hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Matt Evans came on in relief for the Lancers. Evans went 0.2 innings, allowing two runs (none earned) on a walk and a hit batter.
