Boys Golf

VW golf team upends Defiance; remain undefeated

VAN WERT -- On one of the hottest days of the summer, the Van Wert Cougars entertained the Defiance Bulldogs in a Western Buckeye League matchup pitting two undefeated squads. The Cougars are sporting a 4-0 record while the Bulldogs come in at 3-0 in league action.

The 'Dog' days of summer were no match for the Cougar linksters as they came away with a big 161-171 victory over Defiance.

Leading the way for Van Wert were two match medalist. Sophomore Blake Doidge continued his hot ways with a three over par 38. Senior Andrew Bashore, after a brief cool spell, matched Doidge with his own 38. Senior Austin Doidge converted seven straight bogeys and two pars for his 42, while Senior Brock Thatcher was one stoke behind with a 43 to round out the scoring.

Defiance was led by front man Corbin Stykeman as he had the third best score of the day with a 41. Tyler Detter and Jacob Moore each tallied 43 with Henry Weisgerber throwing in a 44.

With a humid wind gently blowing out of the South, an exhibition match was played with the Cougars prevailing in that contest as well. Senior Kyle Urban led the way with a 43, and Senior Zack Leatherman survived the water and sand to post a 45. A pair of 47's from Senior Eason Ladd and Sophomore Brandt Taylor capped off the set of scores. Freshman Matt Cucciarra and Trey Stemen each fired 56 and 74 respectively. The team score of 182 defeated the 204 posted by Defiance.

With the victory, the Cougars jump to 5-0 in Western Buckeye League action and 7-0 in all contests. The Bulldogs drop to 3-1 in both league and overall matches. Van Wert will travel to Redskins territory at the Wapakoneta Country Club on Thursday. Match time will be at 4:30.

Lancer golfers fall short to LCC

LIMA -- The Lincolnview Lancers returned to action after a nine day layoff Tuesday as they traveled to Tamarac Golf Course for a Northwest Conference matchup against Lima Central Catholic and a non- league matchup with Spencerville.

The T-Birds of LCC won the match with a team score of 147, led by match medalist TJ Sims who shot an even par 36. Lincolnview used the scores of Taylor Hoehn (44), jeremy Morris (44), Pierce Wolters (45) and Caleb Girod (46) to shoot a team score of 180. Spencerville's low scorers were Kory Layman and Trevor Crites, who each shot 43. The Lancers edged the Bearcats 180-181. Lincolnview returns to action Wednesday in non- conference action at Delphos Country Club as they take on Delphos St. John's. the Lancers return to conference play Thursday as they travel to The Oaks Golf Course to play Spencerville. Lincolnview is now 6-2 in the NWC and 10-3 overall.

Crestview

The Crestview golf team fell to Paulding by four strokes, 164-168, at Auglaize Golf Club.

Chandler Hurless led the Knights with a 37 while Jamin Rager added a 39. Jarrett Upchurch shot a 46 and Tyler Clifton added a 46 to round out the scoring. Jacob Wortman shot a 50 while Doug Rhoades added a 55.

The Knights are now 4-6 overall.

Girls Tennis

Van Wert vs. Defiance

The Van Wert tennis team improved to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the Western Buckeye League, Tuesday evening, with a 4-1 victory against Defiance.

In first singles, Van Wert junior Betsey Carlton fell to Aapen Ferland 6-0, 6-4, while, in second singles, senior Kaylee Stanski topped Jenna Thomas 6-3, 6-4. In third singles, Van Wert freshman Gretchen Klinker topped Ranae VanBrackel 6-2, 6-1.

In first doubles play, Van Wert seniors Whitney Owens and Lorie Liatos topped Laura Katterheinrich and Tawny Hohenberger 6-1, 6-2. The second doubles team of seniors Melissa Bloomfield and Terry Simson topped Allison Kissner and Kaitlin Soukop, 6-3, 6-1.

Volleyball

Parkway vs. South Adams

The Parkway Panthers wasted little time with Indiana opponents Tuesday, defeating South Adams 3-0. The victory came in dominant fashion as the Lady Panthers won the games 25-12, 25-6, 25-17.

Marian Bevington led the team with seven kills while Emily Crowell added six. Kelsey Bates and Ashley Stose each had five kills for the Panthers.

Stose had 14 digs for Parkway while Matthews added 10.

Crowell led the team in aces with six while Katlyn Smith added 16 assits.

With the win the Panthers improve to 6-0 and will host Midwest Athletic Conference rival, Delphos St. John's, on Thursday in Rockford.

Junior High Cross Country

Van Wert

The Van Wert Middle School cross country teams recently competed at the Greenville Treaty City Invitational. The boys came away with a ninth place finish, while the girls finished in 11th.

On the boys' side, Treig Pierce led the way for the Cougars once again, clocking a time of 11:38 and finishing in sixth place. For his Top 10 finish, Treig won a medal. Kase Schalois, 24th, and Spencer Prichard, 59th, won ribbons for their efforts. Rounding out the scoring for Van Wert was Jacob Hoverman, 97th, and Noah Edwards 131st.

Other Cougars running on Saturday were: Garrett Freeman 144th, Kavon Pierce 147 th, Austin Taylor 172nd, Brady Woodruff 181st, Jacob Boroff 206th, Christian Dunn 212th and Jon Lisa 238th. There were 326 runners and 34 complete teams.

In the girls' race, 320 runners and 28 complete teams competed. Van Wert was led by seventh grader Andrea Foster once again, finishing 30th overall in 13:49. Jacey Eikenberry was close behind, finishing 43rd in 14:02. Eikenberry and Foster both earned ribbons for their Top 60 performance. Other Cougars scoring for the ladies team were Leah Brubaker 102nd, Kelsey Wagner 136th and Clair Butler 138th.

Also racing for the Lady Cougars were Taylor Whitcraft 159th, Karlyn Koontz 165th and Shelby East 246th.

Both squads will be back in action on Saturday at the Tiffin Cross Country Carnival which will feature schools from five different states.

Junior High Volleyball

Wayne Trace vs. Lincolnview

The Lincolnview junior high volleyball teams swept Wayne Trace Tuesday evening as both the seventh and eighth grade teams were victorious.

In the seventh grade match, Lincolnview won 25-22 and 25-7 while in the eighth grade match, the Lady Lancers wont 25-14, 25-13.

Boys golf

DELPHOS ST. JOHN'S 163, FORT RECOVERY 199:

Delphos St. John's Brad Wannemacher shot a 38 in the Blue Jays' victory over Fort Recovery at the Delphos Country Club. Drew Fischer shot 41 for St. John's (3-1).
