VW athletic cancellations:VAN WERT -- The varsity boys tennis match with Ottawa-Glandorf, scheduled for April 4, was canceled. A remake time and date has not yet been set.The varsity softball game against Parkway, scheduled for April 4, was postponed until April 17 at Rockford's Shanes Park at 5 p.m.The varsity baseball game against St. Marys, scheduled for April 4, was canceled. Marc Smith’s squad turned in a team GPA of 3.793, which was third in the state. It’s the third straight year Smith’s team has been honored for academics. ----- DSJ track teams fall in tri-meet: DELPHOS — The Delphos St. John’s boys and girls track and field teams dropped a tri-meet to Midwest Athletic Conference foes Marion Local and Coldwater Thursday night at Delphos' Scott Memorial Track. Coldwater won the girls with 62.25 points, followed by the Lady Flyers (57.25) and the Lady Blue Jays (55.5). Marion Local (85.16) won the boys portion, followed by the Cavaliers (46.50) and St. John’s (43.33). Coldwater 3:53.89. ----- VWHS honors cheerleaders:VAN WERT -- The Van Wert High School cheerleaders were honored at the Awards Recognition held recently in the Lecture Hall at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center. Senior cheerleaders Heather Farr, Amanda Rogers and Brigit Youngblutt were honored with a senior clock for their four years of service to Van Wert High School cheerleading. Coach Arlene Hurless recognized the seniors for their excellent leadership and dedication shown throughout the season. Senior cheerleaders and basketball players were presented senior scrapbooks made by the cheerleaders to capture the memories of the 2007-08 season. Cheerleader varsity letter winners were third year letter winners, Heather Farr, and Amanda Rogers. Earning their first-year varsity basketball cheerleading letter were Taylor Greve, Natalie Hood, Allison Klinker and Danae Westgerdes. Earning her fourth year varsity basketball cheerleading letter was Youngblutt. This is only the second time in the history of Van Wert cheerleading that a cheerleader has earned a varsity Letter all four years of her high school career. Special recognition was given to Youngblutt, selected as “Most Valuable Cheerleader”; Farr, selected as “Most Spirited Cheerleader”; Briana Mercer, selected as “Most Improved Cheerleader”; and Amanda Rogers, who earned the Coach’s Award.
