WRESTLING:
VW wrestling update
The Van Wert High School wrestling team competed in the Greater Miami Valley Wrestling Association Holiday Tournament held at Vandalia Butler High School this past Saturday and Sunday.
There were 43 teams that participated, with Graham easily winning with 397 team points and 12 first-place finishes in the 14 total weight classes. Van Wert finished 29th overall and 14th in the small school division.
Individually, sophomore Connor Massillo placed fourth for the second year in a row in the 145-pound weight class. Senior Austin McIntosh, at 215 pounds, placed eighth in his division.
As a side note, 2003 Van Wert High School graduate and outstanding high school and college wrestler Jason Roush is coaching the Glen Este wrestling team, which placed sixth overall and fifth in the large school division with 104.5 team points.

BOWLING:
Cougar Bowling update
In one of the top matches of the day, the Van Wert boys’ varsity bowing team, with one loss, rolled against unbeaten Wapakoneta.
The Cougars started the match down 51 pins after the first regular game, scoring a 928 to a 979 game by Wapak. In the next regular game, the Van Wert team rolled hot, racking up a total of 1,007 pins to a cool 888 game by the Redskins. This gained the Cougars 119 pins and an overall 68-pin advantage.
In the first of the baker games, Wapakoneta struck first, gaining 19 pins to cut the Cougars’ lead to 49. However, Van Wert was ready to roll and wouldn’t allow the Redskins to catch up. The Cougars gained pins in the final four baker games to give them a 2,874-2,676 victory on the day – a 198-pin advantage.
With the Cougars’ win, the league has a four-way tie for first place, with Coldwater, Van Wert, Wapak and St. Marys all at 5-1.
High scores on the day for the Cougars were Eason Ladd, 247 and 189; Luke Riley, 225 and 201; Nate Simson, 199 and 192; and Devin Beair, 192 and 188. Van Wert will roll back into action next Saturday in New Bremen against Marion Local. For all stats go to the league website at www.wohsbc.com.
The Lady Cougars led after the regular games by 208 pins and never looked back in the bakers, gaining another 127 pins there for a 335-pin victory.
The win leaves Van Wert in a two-way tie for fourth place with a 5-1 record on the season. High scores for the Cougars were as follows: Kellie Mace, 220 and 197; Terry Simson, 193 and 189; and Britany Myers, 171.

COLUMBUS GROVE -- Columbus Grove fell 57-38 to Pandora-Gilboa in a Putnam County League basketball match-up Saturday.
The Pandora-Gilboa (5-0) squad only had five players score in the contest with 53 of the 57 points coming from Joshua Lee (23), Tyler Gratz (16) and Sam Maag (14).
Columbus Grove's (1-2) Drew Barto led the Bulldog offense with 11 points while Nate Schroeder added eight.
