Golf:
Van Wert's Tony Conn, who finished 6th in the Division II State Golf Championships this past season, was the runner-up in Monday's Optimist International Ohio District Championship at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown. Conn shot a 68 on the day and forced a sudden-death playoff with the 2008 Division III State Champion, Kevin Miller. Conn lost to Miller on the second playoff hole. Conn's performance was good enough to qualify him for the upcoming Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The tournament will be held from July 29 to Aug. 3 at the PGA National Resort and Spa. The course is the home to the PGA Tour's Honda Classic.

Church softball leagues play this week
Both divisions of the Van Wert Parks and Recreation Department's church softball leagues played this week. In Division II games on Monday, St. Mary's Knights of Columbus edged Liberty Baptist 28-27, Calvary White defeated Christian Life Center 23-18 and North Union United Methodist blanked Trinity UM 16-0. The K of C-Liberty Baptist game was tied after six innings, but the Knights of Columbus scored a run in extra innings to take the win. Calvary White got a scare from CLC, which mounted a comeback midway through the game, but came up a bit short at the end. Undefeated North Union had no problem downing Trinity UM in a run-rule victory. In Division I play on Tuesday, Trinity UM defeated LifeHouse 17-14, First UM Blue downed St. Mary's Red 10-7 and Trinity Friends whitewashed Convoy United Methodist 12-0.
Both teams played well in the opener, with players on both squads hitting home runs, but Trinity UM managed to eke out the win of previously undefeated LifeHouse. In the second game, First UM Blue played hard to get the 10-7 victory over St. Mary's Red while Convoy UM had to play without some key players, which allowed Trinity Friends to get its first win of the season in a 12-0 shutout.

ACME Baseball:
Celina blanks Parkway Acme team
Parkway ended its short week with a trip to Celina on Wednesday to play the Bulldogs in a league game at Montgomery Field in Eastview Park. The game began quietly as Drew Luginbill and Celina's Pfeffenberger locked up in a classic pitchers' duel, with both teams scoreless after three innings. Celina broke into the scoring column in the fourth on a triple to deep center by Waterman, a walk, a single and a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead. They played add on with two more runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth to sit comfortably in front by a 5-0 score. Parkway was unable to muster any offense for the evening as Pfeffenberger threw a complete game shutout, allowing only three hits. Parkway did hit several balls hard, but the Celina defense was up to the task. Luginbill pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits, five walks and six strikeouts. Zach Bates came on in relief and walked in a run before settling down and striking out the last Bulldog hitter with the bases loaded. Levon Archer, Luginbill and Jake Jackson all singled for the Panthers. Parkway returns to action next Monday with a double header against Fort Recovery at Don Black Field. The first game will begin at 5:30 p.m.
