CELINA - The Van Wert Cougars have duplicated their ACME Baseball Tournament run from last summer, as they are on the brink of reaching the state tourney once again. The Cougars (14-10) will need to defeat Coldwater twice tonight to claim a spot in the state tournament. In 2007, the VW summer diamond men fell just short of the Big Dance. Van Wert reached this point with an 8-5 thumping of Wapak Monday evening in their second elimination contest of the district tournament. The Cougars pounded out a total of 13 hits against Wapak pitching (Rosenbeck pitched 6.2 innings, allowing seven runs on 12 hits with three walks, a hit batter and two strikeouts. Stoll pitched the final 0.1 innings, allowing one run on one hit with two walks). Brock Bell (two-RBI double, RBI single), Craig Thomas (two-RBI double), Brock Thatcher (double), Jordan Scheidt (RBI single) and Josh Vorhees (RBI single) all led the Cougars in hitting. Shaun Putman pitched the complete game allowing five earned runs on nine hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Next for the Cougars (14-10) is Coldwater. The two teams will square off at 6:00 p.m. tonight. If Van Wert can win that game both teams will play again immediately after at approximately 8:15 p.m.

Note: The Patrick Henry Patriots (14-5) defeated the Defiance Bulldogs twice to win the District 1 ACME Baseball Title and advance to this weekend's state tourney. The Patriots will play the District 5 winner (either VW or Coldwater) Saturday in Coldwater at noon.
