Van Wert places fifth at Celina Invitational

CELINA -- The Van Wert golf team traveled down 127 to take part in the 21 team Celina Invitational and came away with a fifth place finish.  The Cougars trailed only Minster (311), Van Buren (327), Lima Shawnee (336), and Delphos St. Johns (337)

JJ Jackson (Elida) was the match medalist with an outstanding round of even par 72.  Adam Sherman (Minster) had a 75 and teammate Craig Pirpus followed with a 76 to pace the champions.  Micheal Caris (Van Buren) had a 78.

Van Wert (339) was paced by Sophomore Blake Doidge and Senior Brock Thatcher as each carded a round of 81.  Both these scores tied Celina's Jeremy Kerr for a tie for 7th place individually.

Rounding out the cougars scoring was Senior Kyle Urban (first varsity match for the cougars) with a 85 and Senior Andrew Bashore chipped in with a 92.  Senior Eason Ladd, due to a scoring error had to record a 128, actually scored an 89 in his first varsity contest.

Van Wert will travel to Coldwater to take on the Cavaliers and the Parkway Panther in a triangle match on Tuesday.

Parkway 175 Fort Jennings 197

ROCKFORD - The Parkway Panthers boy's golf team defeated Fort Jennings Friday night at DEERFIELD Golf Club by a 175-197 count. Medalist of the match was Tyler Oliver (Parkway) 41.

Parkway low scores: Chris Roth 44, Corey Decker 44.

Fort Jennings low scores: Cody Warnecke 44.

VW Parks concludes adult softball leagues for 2008

VAN WERT -- The Van Wert Parks & Recreation Department's church softball leagues ended tournament play this week, with Calvary White earning the traveling trophy. Monday night started with a semifinal game between the Knights of Columbus and North Union United Methodist in Division II tournament action. That game was won by North Union 9-8 in the seventh inning. The championship game between North Union and Calvary White was a good one, with the two teams tied through eight innings of play. In the ninth inning, though, Calvary White exploded offensively, scoring 10 runs in the inning to down North Union 16-6. After winning the Division II title, earning it the right to play in Division I next year, Calvary White then took on Life House in the Traveling Trophy Game to decide the overall champion of both divisions. The game, a tradition for nearly 30 years, was a good one, with the score close most of the way. However, Life House committed some costly errors near the end of the game and Calvary White took advantage of them to win 17-10 over the Division I squad. Brett Ryan earned the 2008 Church League Home Run champion title.
