YWCA offering youth swimming/water safety lessons With all the cold weather behind us and summer quickly approaching it's time to think about our summer fun in the sun around the water. Is your child water oriented or are they afraid to get wet? Let us instruct your child(ren) in swim lessons and water safety. Each session is full of educational facts to keep those little ones safe around the water.The YWCA of Van Wert is now taking sign-ups for our spring session of Red Cross Swim Lessons. We offer classes for all ages from Infant to the advanced swimmer or maybe you prefer a Private swim class. For more information please contact your YWCA at 419-238-6639.

YWCA Summer Food Program in 13th Year As part of our mission to empower women and children, the YWCA of Van Wert County is pleased to announce we will be offering the Summer Food Service Program.  This program is sponsored by the State of Ohio Child Nutrition Services and the United Way of Van Wert County.  The Summer Food Program this year at the YWCA will be offering breakfast and lunch during the program.  The program begins Monday, June 9, 2008 and will end Friday, August 1, 2008.  The program hours are 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. 

A FREE nutritious breakfast and lunch is available to any child up to 18 years old, and a FREE recreational program for children 4 to 12 years old. The YWCA will be offering a recreational camp with supervision after the Summer Food Program until 4:30 PM.  Seperate registration is required.  Please contact the YWCA for more details.      

Participants will enjoy healthy meals, games, field trips, swimming, crafts, mentoring, and self esteem-building activites.  All activities are well supervised by qualified mentors, supervisors, and lifeguards. **The meal service portion of this program is provided without regard to race, color, national orgin, sex, age or disability.  Any one who believes they have been discriminated against should write immediately to the administrator.  Food Nutrition Service, US Department of Agriculture, 3101 Park Center Drive, Alexander, VA 22302. 

The YWCA is a not-for-profit organization and is funded by the Van Wert County Foundation, and the United Way Agency.

Mercer County track and field meet results (day one)

The Parkway Panthers are in third place in the girls meet and fourth in the boys after one day at the Mercer County track and field meet.

Celina leads both the boys meet (52) and girls (46) while Marion Local (36) is in second in the girls and St. Henry (39) in the boys.

Fort Recovery (22), Coldwater (18) and St. Henry (6) round out the girls meet while the Flyers (38.5) are third in the boys with Coldwater (7) in fifth and Fort Recovery (1.5) in sixth.

The Lady Panthers (26) were led by Marian Bevington who took first in the high jump (5-feet-2) and second in the long jump (17-1.75). Bevington also qualified for the finals in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.35

Also scoring for the Lady Panthers was Niquie Berry. Berry placed second in the discus with a throw of 98-9. Kathy Dirksen of Marion Local won the event with a toss of 116-3.

Parkway girls qualifying for Friday's finals include Alexis Bates (13.48) and Amanda On (13.77) in the 100m. On also qualified in the 200m with a time of 29.06.

Brittany Hesse (1:10.4) and Tara Luth (1:10.7) both qualified for Friday's finals in the 400m.

On the boys side of things, Parkway's 17 points were earned by a slew of athletes.

The 4x800m team of Tim Schlemmer, Landon Brehm, Taylor Feasel and Adam Schlemmer placed fifth with a time of 9:34.20.

In the high jump, Marcas Heitkamp's clearance of 5-6 tied him with Marion Local's Taylor Stucke and Fort Recovery's Adam Steinbrunner for fifth place.

Josh Fisher took second in the long jump with leap of 20-6.5 and Cole Frank's toss of 115-6 earned the Panthers a third place finish in the discus.

Fisher also qualified for the 100m dash with the fastest qualifying time of 11.51 and the 200m - again with the fastest qualifying time - with a 23.06.

In the 400m Aron Osborne (54.90) had the fastest qualifying time while teammate Adam Schlemmer qualified with a time of 57.7.

VW boys win tri-meet, girls second

The Van Wert boys dominated their tri-meet with Kenton and Ottawa-Glandorf Thursday evening while the Lady Cougars placed second behind the Titans.

Van Wert - 73 points

Kenton - 50 points

O-G - 40 points

VW Lady Cougars - 57 points

Kenton Lady ‘Cats - 25 points

Boy's Meet:
 

4x800 meter relay team of Jacob Bagley, Kenton Holliday, Blake Davis and Aaron Bagley won with a time of 8:53.

Tim Hoverman was first in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.8. Trey Eberle was second with a time of 18.4 and Jerod Schoonover was third with a 19.8.

1600m run, Aaron Bagley was first with a 4:50.5, while Holliday was second at 4:51.8.
 Sam Tindall won first for the Cougars in the 100m with a time of 10.9, while Kirtis Calvelage was second (11.3).

4x100m team of Ryan Gent, Tindall, Davis and Calvelage was second (45.9).
 Gent placed fourth in the 400m at 59.8.

300m hurdles, Eberle was first with a time of 45.9 and Hoverman was second with a time of 48.5.
 Davis was first in the 800m (2:09.8) with Jacob Bagley third (2:15.1) and Holliday fourth (2:15.8).

Calvelage took second in the 200m (23.4) and Tindall third (23.7).
 Brian Easley was second in the 3200m at 11:01.

Ross Thatcher had a good showing in the throwing events, taking first in the shot put (45-feet-11) and second in the discus (121-6).
 Eberle was third in the long jump (16-3) and David Racster was fourth in the high jump at 5-4.

Girl's Meet: 

4x800m relay team of Lauren Taylor, Madison Riethman, Taylor Greve and Kandace Stanski placed second.

In the 100m hurdles, Madison Moonshower placed first, Ashley Mohr was third and Jennifer Klausing fourth.
 The 100m dash saw Morgan Smelser and Misty Hilleary tie for fourth while Taylor took third and Greve fourth in the 1600m.

The 300m hurdles had Mohr placing second and Klausing fourth.
 Riethman took first in the 800m run.

Erica Davis and Rebecca Ries took third and fourth respectively in the 3200m run.
4x400m relay, Van Wert's team of Riethman, Sarah Wierwille, Kaylee Stanski and Kandace Stanski took second. Wierwille was second in the 400m.

Hannah Phlipot won the shot put with teammate Jade Osenbaugh taking second.
 Osenbaugh took first in the discus with Phlipot in fourth.

Natalie Hood won the high jump for Van Wert while Riethman was second and Kandace Stanski third in the long jump.
