FOOTBALL:
Delphos St. John's runs over LCC 20-0
Blue Jays record 252 yards rushing
DELPHOS - The Delphos St. John's Blue Jays opened the 2008 high school football season Saturday night with a convincing 20-0 win over the T-Birds of LCC. Sophomore running back Evan Burgei ran over the T-Birds for 135 yards on just 13 carries, including a 66-yard fourth quarter TD-bolt that sealed the deal in this one. The Blue Jays started the scoring in the first quarter, as Jordan Leininger rolled in from 5-yards out. Jordan Rode's PAT kick was good and St. John's led 7-0. Rode would add two first quarter field goals (32-yards and 27-yards) to round out the first half scoring for the Jays. Delphos' defense held the T-Birds to only 72 total yards in the first half and 192 yards (99 rushing; 93 passing) for the game. Meanwhile, St. John's racked up 291 total yards (252 rushing; 39 passing) to control the game. One other big factor in the Jays' win was the turnover battle. The Blue and Gold only committed two turnovers to LCC's five miscues. Both teams recorded nine first downs. Now 1-0, St. John's travels to Tinora (1-0) next Friday, while LCC (0-1) hosts Crestview (0-1).

Lincolnview competes at DSJ Cross Country Invite
DELPHOS -- The Lincolnview Lancer Cross Country teams started out their season Saturday at the Delphos St. John's Blue Jay Invitational. The Lady Lancers placed 3rd overall behind Spencerville and Ottoville. The Lancers were paced by 3 top 15 finishes. Taylor Fries (9th), Casey Patterson (12th), and Taylar Boroff (13th) led the Lady Lancers. The scoring was followed up by Karissa Burns (25th) and Brittany Katalenas (37th). "The girls ran a solid race and this gives us a great place to start. We certainly have room to improve but I like the way that we competed and the way that we started the season. The girls proved to themselves that they can be right in the mix if they work together and run smart," Lancer Coach Matt Langdon said.
The varsity boys placed 5th overall in the race. They were led by Seth Wisener who took runner up honors placing second and running an outstanding time of 17:10. Seth was followed by Jordan Simpson (15th), Kyle Thatcher (20th), Austin Kayser (49th), and Joseph Shoppell (51st). "The boys are more talented that what they showed today. We just had too big of a gap between Seth and the rest of the team. If we can figure out how to close that gap, we will be ok. We have some work to do to get where we want to be. Three teams from our conference took it to us and if are to defend the NWC crown we have to step it up a notch," Lancer Coach Matt Langdon said.
The Lincolnview Jr. High Teams also participated in the Delphos St. John Inv. The girls placed first as a team with 4 placing in the top 10: Haley McAbee 10th 14:43, Kaylee Thatcher 7th 14:44, Christine Stemen 9th 15:01, and Taylor Miller 10th 15:03. Kaitlyn Brandt ran as the 5th runner placing 17th 15:33. The boys placed 5th as a team and were paced with a 5th place finish by Austin Treesh in 12:20.
