*********************************** *VW-Area ACME baseball tourney update: DJ 8, CV 5 VAN WERT - The Delphos Jefferson Wildcats struggled with a very young line-up throughout the summer ACME season, winning no games. Unfortunately for the competition, the Wildcats have started to come of age. Jefferson, with the help of a few Legion baseball players that have joined the line-up, has reeled off two straight wins in the ACME tournament. After dismantling Lincolnview 11-1 earlier in the week, the Wildcats shocked previously unbeaten Crestview by an 8-5 count Wednesday night in the second round of the tourney. Jefferson jumped out to an 8-1 advantage, and then held off a furious Crestview rally in the final at-bats. Jefferson's Craig Carder recorded 14 strikeouts in picking up the "W" and went the distance, allowing the five runs (three earned) on five hits with two walks and two hit batters. The Wildcats were led at the plate by Brayton Kruse, who had a two-out, two-RBI single in Jefferson's four-run fourth inning and Sean Fisher, who recorded a solo homerun. Nick Ulrey absorbed the setback for Crestview. He pitched the first four innings for the Knights and surrendered seven runs (six earned) on nine hits with two walks, two hit batters and three strikeouts. Jordan Speaks came on in relief and allowed one run on one hit with three walks and two strikeouts. Jefferson (#5) will take on Van Wert (#2), tonight, at 5:00 p.m. at VW's Smiley Park. The Knights (11-1), who are the tournament's top-ranked team, will face Delphos St. John's (#3) in an elimination contest immediately following the Van Wert/Jefferson game.
----- DSJ 13, LV 3 VAN WERT - The Delphos St. John's Blue Jays ended Lincolnview's ACME season Wednesday night with a convincing 13-3 five inning, run-ruled triumph. With the win the Blue Jays (7-6) stay alive in the double-elimination tourney and advance to take on Crestview (11-1) in tonight's late tournament game (7:15 p.m.) at VW's Smiley Park. Lincolnview ended the summer season at 4-7. Ty Bergfeld, Curt Metzger, and Chris Pohlman led St. John's offense with numerous hits, steals, and runs scored. Matt Webb picked up the victory for DSJ. He went the distance, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Thatcher took the loss for Lincolnview, as he lasted only three innings allowing nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits with two walks, a hit batter and one strikeout. Anthony Simpson pitched the remainder of the game, allowing four runs on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Add as favourites (26) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 746
