Van Wert claims WBL opener against Elida

VAN WERT - The Cougar golf team hosted the Bulldogs from Elida at the Willow Bend Country Club.  The Cougars came away with an impressive 155 to 181 victory. Leading the way for the victors and earning match medalist honors, with a fine score of 37, was senior Andrew Bashore.  Bashore was followed close behind by sophomore Brandt Taylor as he carded a three over par 38.  Taylor tied with Elida's JJ Jackson for runner up medalist honors. A couple of Cougar seniors rounded out the scoring as Zack Leatherman and Eason Ladd each recorded rounds of 40. Classmate Brock Thatcher and sophomore Blake Doidge participated with rounds of 41 and 43 respectively. Elida's team score of 181 was achieved by Jackson (38), Kevin Wisher (46), Andrew Bowman (47), and Ben Kales (50).  Kirk Boroff and Nick Fraley rounded out the team effort. With the victory, Van Wert improves to (3-0) overall and (1-0) in conference play. The Cougars will travel to Bath on Monday to continue with WBL action.

"It's a Girl Thang"

"It's a Girl Thang" is a mini-seminar offered at the YWCA of Van Wert County on Tuesday September 16th from 7:00 - 8:30 pm for girls ages 9 - 12.  Dr. Celeste Lopez, a Pediatrician from Delphos will be on hand to offer information on changes in our young ladies lives during those tender teenage years. Discussion will include the changes in the body and mood swings. Call the YWCA of Van Wert County to register at 419-238-6639, cost is $5.00 per person. Pre-registration is required.

Babysitter's Class

The American Red Cross Babysitter's class will be offered at the YWCA of Van Wert County on Saturday October 11^th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm for ages 10 - 16.   This class will offer the basics on infant, and toddler child care including first aid and the technique to use for a choking child and infant. Completion of the program will provide the participant with a certification card on Child and Infant Care through the American Red Cross. Cost is $50.00 and Pre-registration is required. Healthy Relationships 101

The YWCA of Van Wert County will be offering a mini-seminar on Healthy Relationships Thursday, September 25th from 7:00 - 9:00 pm, for ages 12 - 20.  Relationships can be fun, and sometimes confusing! Lady Jays defeat Parkway Lady Panthers in golf action

DELPHOS - With a 47 from Morgan Wells setting the pace, the St. John's girls golf team dispatched Parkway 204-218 in a Midwest Athletic Conference dual Wednesday at the Delphos Country Club. The Lady Jays (2-2) host Minster 4 p.m. Monday.

Crestview defeats Cory-Rawson 4-0 in girl's soccer

RAWSON -- The Lady Knights earned their first win of the season Thursday evening downing the Cory-Rawson Hornets 4-0 in Rawson. Natalie Frey led the Crestview attack with two assists while Madison Etzler, Sarah Taylor, Shena Simmons and Carlee Mefferd all scored goals. The Lady Knights' defense held the Hornets' offense to just 16 shots and a few opportunities. Crestview goalkeeper, Kayla Richardson, picked up the shutout. Crestview, now sitting at 1-1 on the season, hits the road again on Saturday when the Lady Knights travel to Miller City to face the Wildcats at 3 p.m.

Van Wert falls to Elida 3-2 in girl's tennis action

ELIDA -- The Van Wert girl's tennis team had a hard-fought match with the Elida Bulldogs Thursday evening in Elida, falling 3-2. In first singles, Elida sophomore Jessie Adkins topped Lady Cougar junior, Betsey Carlton, 6-4, 6-4 while Bulldog senior, Jessica Stambaugh, hung on to defeat Van Wert senior Kaylee Stanski 6-2, 6-3. Van Wert freshman Gretchen Klinker topped Elida sophomore Emily Fernandez 7-5, 6-0 to give the Cougars a win. In doubles action, Van Wert's first doubles team of seniors Kristen Schlatter and Lori Liatos lost to sophomore Amanda Brickner and senior Amy Sarno 6-3, 6-4. Van Wert's second doubles team of seniors Melissa Bloomfield and Whitney Owens downed Caitie Kales and Jessica Foust 6-0, 6-0. The loss drops Van Wert to 1-2 on the young season.
