VAN WERT -- All of the results/stats from games played in the area Thursday night are listed below. Boys Golf (Division II) Cougars fall short of state golf tourney; The Van Wert golf team traveled to Sycamore Springs Golf Course to participate in the Division II District Golf Tournament. Nine teams and all the individuals were vying for the two team and two individual tickets to the State Golf Tournament next weekend in Columbus. Out of the nine teams, the top three teams all came from the same sectional. The Bryan Golden Bears, the Van Wert Cougars, and the Wauseon Indians were the class of the field as at the end of nine holes the Indians held a 155 team score to the Golden Bears 156 team score. Van Wert was three shots behind Bryan with a 159 score. With the wind blowing at a constant 20 mph and the temperature hovering around the 55 degree mark. The teams headed out to the back nine. Bryan showed their team supremacy as they tallied a 151 to take first place in the District Tournament. Their team score of 307 outclassed the rest of the field. The second place birth to the state tournament came down to five shots as the Indians were able to gain one more shot on the second nine to defeat the Cougars by a score of 321 to 326. Leading the way for the victorious Golden Bears was Match Medalist Cody Ross as he fired an impressive round of 74. Steele (76), Davenport (77), and Shaffer (80) rounded out the score of 307. Wauseon was led in scoring by a pair of 78's as Kaleb Figy and Jake Drummer paced the Indians. An 82 by Dietrich and an 83 by Bingham sent the Indians to the State Tournament. As for the third place Cougars, they were led in scoring by Senior Brock Thatcher with a 79. Thatcher turned in 37 and a tough triple bogey on his 17th hole contributed to his 42 on the back. Senior Zach Leatherman followed with a 39 on his first nine holes and finished his back side with a 42 for his team score of 81. Brothers, Senior Austin Doidge and Sophomore Blake Doidge, each shot 83 to round off the team score of 326. Austin turned in a 41-42 while Blake fired a 42-41 for their 18 holes. Senior Andrew Bashore shot a 44-44 for his team score of 88. As for the two individuals that advanced to the State Tournament, two young men tied for first and second with a round of 77. Hunt from Port Clinton and Kime from Bucyrus headed to the first hole for a playoff to determine who would be the number one individual and the second individual. Team scores after the top three: Edison 333, Shelby 334, Genoa 338, Clear Fork 343, Rossford 367, and Lake with a 369. All qualifying teams and individuals will compete at the Scarlet Golf Course at the Ohio State University next Friday and Saturday. ----- Boys Golf (Division III) Stone Ridge Golf Club (Bowling Green); Another year, another Jeffcat heading to state. After Dillon Klein posted back-to-back state appearances in 2006 and 2007 (a state title in 2006 and a top-five finish in 2007), Austin Clarkson is ready to carry the Delphos Jefferson torch. The junior - who celebrated his 17th birthday on Thursday while playing in the Division III district tournament at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green - shot an 81 to tie for the third best individual qualifier spot. The top-four finish means that he will be taking part in next week's state tournament at The Players Club at Foxfire Golf Club in Lockbourne. "I didn't really think 81 was going to be all that great coming in," said Clarkson, who was one of the first golfers to finish on Thursday and had to sit through the entirety of the tournament to find out if he had made it to state. "My coach, he kept me pretty pumped up and saying that 81 will probably get out. I just had to wait." He won't be the only representative from Delphos. The St. John's Blue Jays missed making the state tournament by seven strokes Thursday. Their team score of 346 was just behind Ottawa Hills' score of 339 for the fourth and final team spot. The Jays were able to qualify an individual, however. Brad Wannemacher's 76 was the lowest individual score of the tournament qualifying him for next week's state tournament. "Since I was a freshman that's what I wanted to do," the Blue Jay senior said. "What does a high school golfer want to do? You want to go to state. All I asked for was a chance to be nervous and I got it." Wannemacher paced a Blue Jay squad that saw its state hopes trickle away in the cold and windy conditions at one of the longest and toughest courses in Northwest Ohio. "The main thing you have to do is stay warm," Wannemacher said. That's exactly what the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds did. Well, more like burn up the course in the T-Birds case. LCC shot a ridiculous 314 to take home the district title while Minster placed second with a 324. Archbold was third with a 330. LCC, Minster, Archbold and Ottawa HIlls all advance to next week's state tournament. Joining Wannemacher and Clarkson as individuals will be Connor Totzke (78) of Liberty Center and Ethan Keller (81) of Mansfield St. Peter. St. John's team score was rounded out by Drew Fisher (83), Brandon Hemker (92) and Cody Kundert (95). Ryan Fischer shot a fifth-man score of 96. Other local individuals competing in Thursday's district tournament included Lincolnview's Anthony Simpson (102) and the Parkway duo of Tyler Oliver (87) and Corey Decker (114). On a day when many golfers struggled to shoot 80 the T-Birds' had three golfers shoot 80 or better. All five LCC linksters shot 81 or better. Oliver Holtsberry led th LCC by shooting a 73 to claim tournament medalist honors. The tournament runner-up was Minster's Adam Sherman with a 75. ----- (Volleyball): VAN WERT 3, O-G 2: (17-25; 25-20; 25-18; 18-25; 15-6) The Cougars stand at (10-8, 6-1 WBL), while O-G is now (11-5, 6-1). Up next in the WBL for Van Wert is Shawnee on Tuesday. CRESTVIEW 3, DELPHOS JEFFERSON 1 Crestview took the first two games of the match 25-16 and 25-19. In the third game, the Wildcats came out on top 25-22. In the fourth game, the Knights turned things around and were victorious 25-10. Crestview is now 14-5 overall and 7-1 in the NWC. The Knights will be back in action on Saturday morning as they travel to Delphos St. John's for a 10:00 a.m. start. ----- (Boys soccer): SHAWNEE 2, VAN WERT 0: Shawnee goalkeeper Austin Howard made two saves to notch his eighth save of the season. Kyler Washam and Adam Khalaf scored for the Indians. Shawnee outshot Van Wert, 21-3. Shawnee is 11-2-1, 7-1 in the Western Buckeye League. Van Wert is 1-10-2. ----- (Girls soccer): BATH 2, DELPHOS ST. JOHN'S 0: Bath's Meghan Taucher had eight saves to post a shutout over Delphos St. John's. Ali Manley and Abby Snyder scored for the Wildcats. Delphos St. John's outshot Bath, 14-8. Bath is 5-7-2. St. John's is 6-7-1.
