VAN WERT - It was a tough night for many of the VW-Area teams on the gridiron Friday, as five of the seven area teams that played fell to defeat (Delphos Jefferson plays at LCC tonight). Only Delphos St. John's, a 14-8 winner over Versailles, and Paulding, a 41-21 victor over Delta, escaped with wins. Van Wert lost its homecoming game to Defiance 35-18, while Parkway was handled by Fort Recovery 26-12, Crestview fell to Allen East 14-10, Antwerp was pounded by Tinora 56-10, and Wayne Trace was on the wrong end of a 60-13 thrashing by Hicksville.

Fort Recovery 26 Parkway 12

ROCKFORD - Parkway struck first, but then watched as Fort Recovery posted 26-unanswered points on the board in the Indians 26-12 victory over the Panthers Friday night. Kris Hughes returned the opening kick-off 90-yards for a score, but that's where the cheering stopped for the Panthers. Fort Recovery tallied 19-second quarter points to take a commanding lead into the break. Parkway finally dented the scoreboard a second time in the final quarter, as Riley Bransteter threw an 11-yard pass to Taylor Feasel, but it was a case of too little, too late for the locals. Fort Recovery posted 366 total yards of offense (102 rushing, 264 passing) to Parkway's 236 total yards (175 rushing, 61 passing).

Paulding 41 Delta 21    

DELTA - The Paulding Panthers returned to their winning ways with a 41-21 pounding of Delta Friday night. Paulding QB Haden Sholl had a career night, accounting for a total of four TD's (three touchdown passes and a 4-yard run). Sholl hit Andrew Mott for 25, 11, and 53-yard scoring strikes. Mott also returned a punt, 80-yards for another score. Paulding jumped out to a 29-0 lead by halftime as the Panthers recorded 243 total yards, with 113 coming on 32 rushing attempts. For Delta, Reid Rayfield pounded out 87 yards and two touchdowns on the ground and threw for 82 yards and a score.

Defiance 35 Van Wert 18    

VAN WERT - Defiance (4-1, 3-1) tallied 28 points in the first half and never looked back. Tim Hoverman had three touchdown runs for the Cougars that covered 35, 9 and 1 yards. After Defiance ran the opening kick-off back for a score, the Cougars (3-2, 3-1)answered with a Hoverman touchdown run. Unfortunately for the locals, the cheering stopped there for awhile, as Defiance posted two more scores to take a 21-6 lead into the second quarter. Hoverman again answered with a 9-yard bolt, cutting the Cougars' deficit to 21-12. Unfortunately, VW lost what little momentum that had at that point, when Defiance scored on a 52-yard run with just seconds remaining in the first half. That put the Bulldogs up 28-12 at the break, and in turn, destroying the Cougars' momentum. In the second half, Defiance went into a ball-control mode, while turning up the defensive pressure. The Bulldogs recorded eight sacks to put a halt to any VW comebacks. Connor Massillo led Van Wert with 104 yards on 16 carries, while also catching one pass for 70 yards.

Delphos St. John's 14 Versailles 8   

VERSAILLES - The Delphos St. John's Blue Jays (5-0), had just enough offense to post a 14-10 MAC-win over the Versailles Tigers Friday night. Blue Jays running back Jordan Leininger, who returned to full strength after a injury suffered in the first game this season, carried the balls 23 times for 166 yards. Quarterback Wes Ulm recorded a 17-yard touchdown run for St. John's also, while Matt Brinkman got the game-winner, a 40-yard touchdown bolt in the final quarter. The Blue Jays tallied 310 yards of total offense (288 run, 24 pass) to Versailles 246 total yards (176 run, 70 pass).

LAFAYETTE - The Crestview Knights did it again - jump out to an early lead - only to see their opponents come back to win the game. The Knights fell for the fifth time this season, as Allen East scored 14 second-half points to defeat Crestview 14-10. Crestview raced out to a 10-0 halftime advantage, as Jordan Gibson scored on a 1-yard run and Jared Perrott kicked a 23-yard field goal. Allen East came back though, scoring solo touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters to pull out the win.

TINORA - Tinora junior running back Blake Foor hit paydirt twice (15-yards, 1-yard) to help the Rams post a 56-10 Green Meadows Conference victory over visiting Antwerp. Alex Batt and Ben Wagner each had a touchdown run for the Rams (2-3, 1-1) also, while quarterback Landon Drewes recorded a 10-of-11 passing night for 223 yards and two scores. The Archers' (2-3, 0-2) lone touchdown came on a Shaile Chamberlain 14-yard touchdown pass reception from Quinn Tempel.

Hicksville 60 Wayne Trace 13

HICKSVILLE - The Aces of Hicksville destroyed the Wayne Trace Raiders by a 60-13 count Friday night in a GMC-showdown. With the win, Hicksville ran it's record to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Green Meadows Conference, while Wayne Trace fell to 2-3, 1-1 in the GMC with the setback. The Aces picked-off Wayne Trace three times, including the very first offensive possession for the Raiders. Logan Battershell bolted for a 92-yard touchdown run, his first of five in the game, to put the tailback over the 100-yard mark with 4:35 still to play in the first quarter on a night when he racked up 325 yards rushing, breaking Charlie Peffley's single game rushing record of 322 yards set in 2005 against Antwerp. Led by Battershell's yardage, Hicksville piled up 456 yards on the ground compared to Wayne Traces' 54 rushing yards. Wayne Trace returns to the field again Friday when the Raiders host Tinora.
