SPENCERVILLE - The Van Wert Cougars lost 2-1 to Spencerville Monday evening in Bearcat Country. Eric Miller (six innings, two runs - (one earned), four hits, one walk, and three strikeouts) absorbed the setback for the Cougars. Van Wert threatened in the third stanza, putting together four base hits, but in the end, the Cougars could only muster one run. Craig Thomas, Alan Leatherman, Brock Thatcher and Karlin Dunlap all picked up singles for the VW diamond men in the inning. Spencerville scored both of its runs in the bottom of the fourth. Van Wert (1-3) returns to action tonight when they travel to Shawnee to open Western Buckeye League play.

CRESTVIEW

Heritage 3 Crestview 0

MONROEVILLE, Ind. - The Crestview Knights fell to the Heritage Patriots of Indiana by a 3-0 count Monday evening in varsity baseball action. The loss drops the Knights to 3-1 on the season. Kyle Balliet (four innings, three runs - (two earned), six hits, three strikeouts, and two walks) absorbed the setback for Crestview. Balliet also led the Knights at the plate by going 2-3 with a double. Briggs Orsbon and Tony Springer picked up the Knights' other two hits. Ian Zollars came on in relief for the Knights going two innings, allowing no runs on three hits with one strikeout.
Crestview is back in action tonight by hosting Parkway.

PARKWAY

Parkway 7 Jefferson 0

ROCKFORD - Shawn Coffman led the Parkway Panthers to a victory over Delphos Jefferson Monday night, tossing a two-hit shutout at Don Black Memorial Field in Rockford. Coffman (2-0) went the distance in only walking one and recording five strikeouts. The Panthers (6-0) took advantage of eight stolen bases, five Jefferson (2-1) errors, four hits, three balks, two wild pitches, two passed balls and a hit batter - along with only four hits - to garner five unearned runs against right-hander Mike Rahrig (0-1) and Damon Joseph. The Panthers scored all their runs in just two innings. In the second, two errors made three walks and five steals that much more effective. Throw in two wild pitches, a passed ball and a suicide squeeze (Derick Snyder) and that put the Panthers up 3-0. In the fifth, when the hosts chased Rahrig after two batters, three balks, two errors, RBI singles (Levon Archer and Marcus Meyer) and RBI groundouts (Snyder and Jeremy Heiser) accounted for the four runs. Both teams are on the road tonight: Parkway at perennial power Crestview and Jefferson at Miller City.

LINCOLNVIEW

Hicksville 12 Lincolnview 1 

HICKSVILLE -- The young and inexperienced Lincolnview Lancers fell to a solid Hicksville squad by a 12-1 count Monday night in varsity baseball action.Lincolnview (0-3) scored in the first on doubles by seniors Lance Dasher and Mike Evans, but were unable to hold the lead. The Aces (1-1) got to starter Jordan simpson for five runs in the third inning, and after three straight hits to start the fourth, Simpson was pulled in favor of younger brother Anthony. Hicksville went on for a six-run fourth, putting the game out of reach. "I thought we were in good position early in the game. We scored first, and Jordan had a strong first two innings. Jordan struck out the first batter in the third, but then seemed to lose his location a bit and Hicksville did a fine job of driving the ball the opposite way. We know the early part of our schedule is difficult, but we wiil keep working to get better," Lancer Coach Roger Salisbury said.

PAULDING 

Defiance 4 Paulding 2 

PAULDING  -- The Paulding Panthers spotted visiting Defiance three first inning runs and could never catch up, as the Bulldogs won by a 4-2 count Monday night in varsity baseball action. A two-run shot off the bat of Defiance's Craig Gutman and a RBI double by Dace Kime in the top of the first inning gave the Bulldogs (3-1) a 3-0 advantage, which was big a enough lead that the Panthers (0-3) were unable to overcome. DHS pitcher Richie Killion, who scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out 15 in the victory, overwhelmed the Panthers. Jarod Riley took the loss for Paulding. With one out in the first, a bunt single toward third by Alex Nofziger got the ball rolling for Defiance. Gutman then stepped up and hit a high homer to right-center that traveled about 355 feet to put DHS in front 2-0. A Steve Riedel walk, a delayed steal and a Dace Kime double put the Bulldogs in front 3-0 before the Panthers were able to close the door. Defiance went in front 4-0 in the third with a two-out rally, thanks mostly to Paulding's lone error that allowed James Frey to drive in Mark Sebring with a RBI single. Paulding then battled back in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs to cut the deficit to 4-2. A Jordan Philpot single, a walk to Hayden Sholl and passed ball got both in scoring position for the Panthers. With two outs, Chris Philpot came through with a two-run single and suddenly it was a ballgame. Both Killion and Riley went the distance for their respective clubs, with Riley finishing with eight strikeouts and three walks. Paulding finished with seven hits, all singles. Gutman led Defiance with his two-run blast, Frey finished with a single and double, Kim had a double and Nofziger had a pair of singles.
