Antwerp 45, Ayersville 44 (2OT)
AYERSVILLE – Not many football experts gave the Archers a chance Friday night against GMC-power Ayersville. But the Antwerp gridiron men pulled the stunner as Gabe Cruz drilled a 25-yard field with 17 seconds left in regulation to send the Archers into overtime with Ayersville, before kicking the game-clinching extra point in the second overtime to give the Archers a 45-44 triumph. Cruz's field goal came 2:24 after Ayersville's Travis Fry put the Pilots in front by a 31-28 count with just 2:41 remaining on the clock. Antwerp struck first in the opening overtime with Josh Smith finding paydirt on a seven-yard run. Ayersville standout Anthony King, who set the school career rushing mark with 230 yards, answered with a 20-yard dash into the end zone to send the contest into another overtime session. Matt Steece hit Josh Wiles for a 20-yard touchdown strike on the Pilots' next possession, but the PAT was blocked to keep the score at 44-38. It was Smith that crossed the goal line again for Antwerp during its second possession of overtime to tie the score, before Cruz booted the PAT through to hand Antwerp the victory. King led the Pilots (4-4, 2-3 GMC) with 230 yards on 31 carries and four scores. Smith, the VW-Area rushing leader, paced the Archers (4-4, 2-3 GMC) with 33 carries for 155 yards and scored three touchdowns. Shale Chamberlain pulled in nine receptions for 113 yards and added two scores for Antwerp. Archers’ fullback John Rindahl also surpassed the 100-yard plateau with 12 carries for 116 yards.

Columbus Grove 21, Paulding 14
PAULDING – The biggest shocker of the night came in Paulding, as the Panthers’ explosive offense was held to 14 points, and Columbus Grove escaped town with a 21-14 victory in NWC-action. The Bulldogs’ R.J. Roof carried the ball 14 times for 73 yards and one score to lead Columbus Grove's (2-6, 2-4 NWC) offense. Also leading the Grove “O” was Jordan Travis, throwing one touchdown pass to Rayce Risser, and then carrying the ball 2-yards for another score. The VW-Area leading passer heading into Friday was Paulding QB Haden Sholl. Even though he carried the ball 17 times for 40 yards and scored both of Paulding's (4-4, 2-4 NWC) touchdowns on 1-yard runs, he could only muster 75 yards through the air, while tossing no TD’s for the first time of the season.

Fairview 73, Wayne Trace 21
FAIRVIEW – It is not that the Wayne Trace Raiders can’t score this season, it’s just that their defense can’t seem to stop anyone. This formula proved itself again Friday night, as the Raiders posted a respectable 21 points on the scoreboard, but unfortunately, surrendered 73 to GMC-bully Fairview. Fairview scored 11 touchdowns en route to a 52-point victory, 73-21, over Green Meadows Conference rival Wayne Trace on Friday. On defense, Wonderly also added a score on a pick-six interception for the Apaches. Wayne Trace (2-6, 1-4 GMC) scored three times, all in the second quarter. Derek Baksa connected with Devin Dias for a 5-yard score, Tevin Hale rushed into the end zone from 11-yards out, and then the speedster also returned a kickoff 79-yards to lead the Raiders. This was the second straight week that Hale has returned a kick-off for a touchdown. Fairview will travel west to face GMC rival Hicksville (8-0, 5-0 GMC) on Friday in a critical GMC-battle, while Wayne Trace entertains Ayersville.

Spencerville 30, Crestview 6
CONVOY – The Crestview Knights fell to the Spencerville Bearcats by a 30-6 count Friday night in Convoy. From the outset, Spencerville (4-4, 3-4 NWC) put Crestview (0-8, 0-6 NWC) in a hole, both with field position and on the scoreboard. On their first possession of the night, the Bearcats wasted little time, as QB Tyler Deitering scored on a 28-yard scamper on a quarterback draw. A Matt Wirth extra point gave the Bearcats a 7-0 lead with 7:59 to go in the first. Deitering also hurt the Knights’ chances with a solid passing game, ending the evening going 13 of 23 for 142 yards and two touchdowns passes. Spencerville made it 10-0 on a 22-yard field goal by Matt Wirth at the end of period number one. The Bearcats took a 17-0 lead into the intermission after an 11-play, 80-yard drive that ended on a 16-yard TD pass from Deitering to Zach Bowers. In the second half, Crestview’s offense continued to sputter, as a fumbled snap on their own two-yard line handed the Bearcats their next score. Chris Hood bulled in from a yard out on the next play. Wirth's kick was good and it was 23-0. Leading 23-0 at that point, Spencerville decided it was time to seal the deal. The Bearcats' final score came on a 12-yard pass play, as Deitering found Keysor and with Wirth’s extra-point kick, the Bearcats held an insurmountable lead at 30-0. Game over! The Knights lone score came when Stephen Semer hit Ian Clay for a 24-yard pass with 1:32 to go in the game. The kick failed. Semer ended the evening completing 12 of 29 for 121 yards with three interceptions and one touchdown.

Ottawa-Glandorf 35, Van Wert 6
OTTAWA – The Van Wert Cougars traveled to Ottawa-Glandorf Friday night and were sent home with a 35-6 setback by the Titans. With the loss, Van Wert stumbled to 3-4 in the WBL and 3-5 on the season. O-G senior quarterback Taylor Kuhlman rolled in from one-yard out in the first few minutes of the game to get the Titans on the scoreboard and from that point, they never looked back. O-G running back Lugo, who had a career rushing night, scored next for the Titans, rumbling in from 47-yards out. He rushed for an O-G school record of 302 yards on the night, breaking Luke Pothast's record of 298 yards at Wapakoneta in 2002. After the Titans went up 14-0, O-G scored one more TD before the break. The Titans and Lugo drove the length of the field, and then Greve did the honors, running the last four-yards to give the Titans a three-score lead. Nolan Croy's third extra-point kick of the night pushed the Titans to a 21-0 advantage. The Cougars finally dented the scoreboard just before the half ended, going on an 11-play, 70-yard drive, as Fleming scored on a one-yard run. Even though the Cougars entered the locker room with some momentum, the locals could not carry it into the third stanza. Instead, O-G answered the Van Wert touchdown early in the third quarter as Lugo scored on a 37-yard run to cap a seven play, 76 yard drive. The Titans then sealed the deal in this one, scoring their fifth TD of the night at the end of the third quarter, as backup quarterback Nathan Kahle scored on a seven-yard run. Van Wert played the entire second half without a true running back. Both Conner Massillo (52 yards on 13 carries) and Donnie Sites left the game at the break due to injuries. In their absence, Fleming recorded 45 yards in six carries and also went 5-of-12 in the passing department for 40 yards. Nathan Williams caught three of those passes for 36 yards. After Lugo's 302 yards, on 23 carries, Greve added 52 yards on eight carries to lead the Titans, who rushed for 372 yards as a team.

Delphos Jefferson 55, Troy Christian 7
TROY – The Delphos Jefferson Wildcats continue to roll through the 2008 season, destroying any opponent that has attempted to stand in their way up to this point. Friday night was no exception either, as the D-Cats rolled to an impressive 55-7 victory over Troy Christian. In what has become a pattern for the Wildcats on Friday night, their defense shut down the opposition’s offense, while the Jefferson “0” was running up the electric bill on the scoreboard. DJ outgained TC 523 total yards to 141. Jefferson, who has used a multitude of weapons over the course of the season, again displayed their offensive versatility again against an undermanned Troy Christian squad. Aaron Schuerman (10 rushes for 124 yard and 1 TD; 2 receptions for 39 yards and 1 TD; plus 186 yards all purpose yards) led the Jefferson offense, while Matthew Antalis (6 out of 7 XP; 2 receptions for 64 yards with a TD; 51.8 kick off average); Eric Short (10 rushes for 90 yards and 2 TD's; 2 receptions for 27 yards and 1 TD); and Josh Miller (7 of 9 for 134 yards and 4 TD passes); all had big nights too. Defensively, it was once again another monster night for Sean Osting, as the senior recorded 11 tackles (2 of them for loss) and one QB hit, which gives him an incredible 22 for the season. Craig Carder added eight tackles with two for a loss, while Sean Fisher recorded two interceptions on the night. Jefferson’s defense now gives up just 40.6 yards per game and five points per contest. Playoff implications and the NWC Title’s on the line next week when the D-Cats tangle with undefeated Ada.
