With the win, Coldwater improves to 4-2, while the Cougars fall to a respectable 3-3 on the season. The Cavaliers led much of the contest, but the Cougars made a move in the final few minutes of action to make it a game. With just over five minutes left, the VW hardwood men took a one-point 50-49 lead. After Coldwater momentarily knotted the score at 50, VW went up by three on a tri-fecta by Jake Bagley. Unfortunately for the Cougars, the Cavaliers made one last move to outlast them for the “W”. Three straight possessions at the charity stripe, plus the inside work of 6-7 MAC first team player Eric Lefeld gave the Cavaliers the needed cushion to pull out the victory. Coldwater had taken a one-point, 14-13 advantage after the first quarter of action, and then increased that to a 32-26 halftime advantage. The Cougars started to make their move in the second half, out-pointing the Cavaliers 17-13 in the third stanza to cut their deficit to only two points at 45-43 with one period to play. Unfortunately for VW, it was a case of too little, too late as the Cavaliers ended the contest winning the final quarter of action 18-17. Stats-wise, Coldwater went to the charity stripe 32 times, connecting on 17 for 53 percent, while the Cougars only visited the foul line 14 times, connecting on 13 of those for a sizzling 93 percent. From the field, VW recorded a 48 percent shooting night (20 of 42), while Coldwater came in at 41 percent (20 of 49). The Cougars won the glass wars 27-19. The one big stat that basically tells the tale of this game was in the turnover battle. Coldwater committed only six miscues, while VW had troubles taking care of the ball with 16 turnovers, 11 of those coming in the first half. Scoring-wise, Jacob Bagley led the VW charge with 24 points, while sophomore guard Cory Clifton poured in 12 points. Evan Hammons, Tyler Putman, and Cory Mohr contributed 8, 7, and 6 markers, while Jake Olson added three points. For Coldwater, four players made the double-digit scoring column. Wenning, Lefeld, Seifring, and Thomas tallied 17, 15, 12, and 12 points for the Cavaliers. The VW junior varsity team remained undefeated at 6-0 with a hard-fought 51-48 win. Jacob Hood led the Cougars with 17 points, while Donny Sites and Brandt Taylor each chipped in with 11 markers. *The Cougars are back in action tonight as they travel to Delphos for a battle with the Blue Jays. With the win, Kalida improves to 5-2, while the Raiders (0-6) remain winless on the season. This game was a mismatch for the get-go, as Kalida, behind the scoring performance from Jordan Basinger raced out to big first half leads and never looked back. Basinger finished the night with 25 points for the Wildcats, while teammates Kristopher Osterhage added 14 markers and Justin Kahle chipped in 10 points. Besides the Wildcats scoring barrage, another factor adding to the Wayne Trace loss was the turnover margin. The Raiders committed 15 turnovers on the night while the Wildcats had only four. Caleb Davis scored 14 points to lead Wayne Trace, while teammate Tevin Hale added in 10 markers. Kalida led 23-6 after one stop and 41-23 at the break. A 10-3 run in the third stanza sealed the deal for the Wildcats. In the junior varsity contest, Kalida posted a 41-24 win over the Raiders. Cole Rosswurm scored 10 points for Wayne Trace. Drew Stechschulte had eight for the Wildcats. Wayne Trace will return to action Saturday night as the Raiders host an opponent from across the state line in Indiana’s Woodlan High School.
