VAN WERT - The second week of high school football is now complete and a couple of area teams are now 2-0. Those teams include: Delphos Jefferson, a 31-7 winner over Paulding; Delphos St. John's, who defeated Tinora 27-14; and Parkway, who whitewashed Wayne Trace 33-0. In other area games, Van Wert evened its record to 1-1 with a 38-14 triumph over Elida; Antwerp fell to 1-1 with a tough 42-35 setback to Hilltop; and Crestview lost its second game of the young season, this time to NWC opponent LCC by a 28-0 count.

Delphos Jefferson 31, Paulding 7

DELPHOS - This was a tale of two halves. The first half belonged to the Paulding defense, while the second half was owned by the Jefferson offense. In the first half, Jefferson only had the ball for 9 minutes and 30 seconds, as

Paulding took a 7-0 advantage into the locker room on a Corbin Rhonehouse 3-yard run. But the game is four quarters long, as Jefferson redeemed themselves in quarter number three, exploding for 28 points for the NWC win. Tim Sanders led Jefferson's offensive attack, rushing for 203 yards and two touchdowns and accounting for an incredible 289 total yards in the game. He also added eight tackles on the defensive side of the ball. Other notable performances for the Wildcats were: Matthew Antalis (1 reception for 20 yards, 4 for 4 extra points, and one 29 yard FG, plus 8 tackles (1 sack and 2 tackles for losses); Stuart Miller (13 tackles and 2 fumble recoveries); Bubba Shivley (65 yards rushing with 1 TD and 11 tackles); Sean Fisher (11 tackles). Standouts for Paulding in defeat were: Chris Rohrs (7 rushes for 34 yards); Haden Sholl (completed 14 for 28 for 157 yards); and Justin Riley (4 receptions for 49 yards).

Parkway 33, Wane Trace 0

ROCKFORD - The Parkway Panthers moved to 2-0 on the season with a 33-0 thrashing of cross county rival Wayne Trace. Parkway jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter advantage, and then led 21-0 at the break before sealing the deal with two second half touchdowns.  Jared Bourelle completed 4 of 12 for 67 yards and two touchdowns, while Josh Fisher scored three TD's (16-yard run; 9-yard pass reception; 75-yard interception return). Fisher was a thorn in the side of Wayne Trace's offense, recording a school record four interceptions. He also led the Panthers' defense with eight tackles.

Van Wert 38, Elida 14    

VAN WERT - The Van Wert Cougars improved to 1-1 on the young season with a 38-14 shellacking of the Elida Bulldogs. VW rushed for 276 yards, while holding the Elida offense to a negative one-yard on the ground. Cougar quarterback Tim Hoverman recorded 128 yards on 10 carries, while teammate Sam Tindall carried the ball 17 times for 124 yards and two scores. Van Wert had 27 first downs compared to Elida's 12.

Delphos St. John's 27, Tinora 14    

TINORA - Tinora won the total yardage battle (204-189), but Delphos St. John's won the game 27-14 Friday night, as the Blue Jays improved to 2-0. Sophomore Evan Burgei ran for 106 yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown on a 28-yard run, while teammate Brad Huffman scored on a 23-yard pass from Wes Ulm for St. John's. Ulm also connected with Nate Webb for a 24-yard touchdown pass. Overall though, it was the St. John's defense that turned the tide in this game, forcing Tinora into five turnovers, three which resulted in Blue Jay scores.

Hilltop 42 Antwerp 35

ANTWERP -- The Antwerp Archers and Hilltop Cadets staged an offensive battle Friday evening that resulted in a wild, 42-35 win for the visitors. Hilltop bolted out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, but Antwerp tallied 28 points in the middle two quarters to get back into the game. From that point, Chad Beals took over for the Cadets, bolting 68-yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Beals ended the night with 174 yards rushing while teammate Quinton Nofziger added a pair of short-range touchdown runs. Josh Smith led the way for the Archers' offense with a game-high 208 yards rushing and three touchdowns, while record-setting quarterback Quinn Tempel threw for one TD. The Archers fall to 1-1 with the setback.

LCC 28 Crestview 0

LIMA - The Crestview Knights traveled to Lima Stadium to face NWC league-foe LCC and were sent packing with a 28-0 setback to the T-Birds. Crestview's offense was no match for the LCC defense, as the T-Birds forced the Knights to punt on their first five possessions. Crestview was held to 98 yards of total offense. Meanwhile, LCC provided just enough "O" to get the job done, along with one defensive score.
