VAN WERT - The third week of the 2008 varsity football season is complete and a number of area teams chalked up wins, as: Van Wert clobbered Lima Bath 34-7; Delphos Jefferson shut down Bluffton 28-0; Wayne Trace got win number one with a thrilling 22-16 victory over Crestview; Delphos St. John's outlasted Minster 35-20; Paulding slipped by LCC 21-14; and Antwerp handled Toledo Ottawa Hills 28-14. Besides Crestview, the only other area team to fall short Friday night was Parkway, as defending state champion Marion Local proved to be too strong, upending the Panthers 42-14.

Jefferson 28 Bluffton 0

BLUFFTON - The experts claim that defense wins championships - if that is so, then Delphos Jefferson better make some room in their trophy case for more hardware. Jefferson's defense swarmed Bluffton, allowing the Pirates to a total of just 79 yards of offense, which included an incredible eight yards rushing on the night. Mix in three interceptions, two fumble recoveries, three quarterback sacks, nine quarterback hurries/hits, and you have the makings of total D-Cat defensive domination. A number of Wildcats had career nights on both sides of the ball: Matthew Antalis (8 tackles, 1 interception returned 39 yards for TD, 5 receptions for 69 yards, 4 for 4 XP, and over 51 yards averaged on kick offs); Sean Osting (11 tackles, 3 sacks for a loss of 26 yards, 6 QB hits, and 1 fumble recovery); Derek Shivley (9 tackles, 76 yards rushing, and 1 TD); Stuart Miller (8 tackles and 5 pancake blocks); and Aaron Schuerman (93 yards on 13 carries and 2 touchdowns - 1 for 55 yards); all led Jefferson to their third straight victory of the 2008 season.

MARIA STEIN - The Parkway Panthers fell to Marion Local by a 42-14 count Friday night. The game was never in doubt, as the Flyers bolted to a 14-0 first quarter lead, and then turned that into a 28-0 halftime advantage. Fourteen more points scored in the third quarter sealed the deal for Marion Local in this one. Parkway tallied two fourth quarter touchdowns via the air waves; the first a 77-yard pass from Jared Bourelle to Josh Fisher, and the second a 69-yard pass from Bourelle to Grant Ripley. Parkway falls to 2-1 on the season with the setback, while Marion Local remains unbeaten at 3-0.

Wayne Trace 22 Crestview 16

CONVOY - The Wayne Trace Raiders picked up their first win of the 2008 varsity football season with a 22-16 win over Crestview (0-3). Tevin Hale tallied three touchdowns to lead the Raiders to the win. Hale's first score came on the opening drive, as he hauled in a pass from Raider QB Ryne Jerome and raced 57-yards to the end zone. Crestview cut the Wayne Trace lead at the end of the first quarter, as Jared Perrott connected for a 26-yard field. Unfortunately for the Crestview faithful, the glory did not last long, as Hale took the ensuing kick-off to the house, giving Wayne Trace a 13-3 advantage. The Raiders then tacked on three more points before the intermission, as Jason Gordan kicked a 32-yard field goal. Crestview came out swinging in quarter number three, scoring on their first drive, as QB Stephen Semer raced 32-yards to the end zone. After Perrott's extra point kick, Crestview trailed 16-9. It remained that way until the fourth quarter, when Crestview pulled even at 16-all on a Semer 3-yard run. Wayne Trace and Hale responded with a TD-run of their own. This time, Hale bulldozed his way to paydirt from 11-yards out. Crestview had one more opportunity fall short, as the Knights failed to score inside the red zone in the games final seconds. Crestview is now 0-3 on the season, while Wayne Trace improves to 1-2. Hale led the Raiders in rushing (28 for 99 yards and one score), receiving (3 for 83 yards and a score) and kick-off returns (4 for 130 yards and one score). Jerome was 9-for-20 for 174 yards and a TD. Semer led the Knights in rushing (19 for 78 and 2 scores) and passing (8-for-31 for 154 yards and an interception).

MINSTER - The Delphos St. John's Blue Jays moved to 3-0 on the season with a convincing win over MAC-foe Minster Friday night by a 35-20 score. Blue Jay quarterback Wes Ulm scored three touchdowns on runs of 1, 13, and 35 yards, and also threw for another score, a 28-yard strike to Brad Huffman to lead the Jays to the big win. A.J Klausing sealed the deal for St. John's with a 40-yard fourth quarter bolt to the end zone.

LIMA (BATH TOWNSHIP) - The Van Wert Cougars destroyed their counterparts from Lima Bath Friday night with a 34-6 romp. Sam Tindall led VW to the win, rushing for over 100 yards and scoring three rushing TD's on runs of 23, 62, and 56 yards. Two sophomore standouts put the icing on the cake for VW, as Donnie Sites rumbled in from 29-yards out and Cory Clifton raced 18-yards to pay dirt in the second half. VW shut down Bath's offense, holding the Wildcats to a mere 121 total yards (87 rushing and 34 passing). The Cougars improve to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the WBL.

PAULDING - The Paulding Panthers remained in the early race for NWC dominance with a 21-14 victory over LCC Friday night. Paulding quarterback Haden Sholl found Andrew Mott for a 75-yard scoring strike in the fourth quarter to give the Panthers the big win. Both teams were tied at the break at 7-7 and the end of the third quarter, 14-14. Paulding improves to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in the NWC.

Antwerp 28 Toledo Ottawa Hills 14

OTTAWA HILLS - Josh Smith rushed for three touchdowns (21, 5, and 54 yards) to give the Antwerp Archers a 28-14 triumph over Ottawa Hills in Toledo Friday night. Smith broke a 7-7 halftime tie at the 8:35 mark of the third quarter with a 21-yard run. He then gave the Archers (2-1) a 21-7 lead with 8:12 left in the contest on a 5-yard run. J.J. Bunadrey momentarily brought the Green Bears (0-3) to within striking distance a few minutes later on a 17-yard pass from quarterback Jimmy Zimmerman, but Smith countered seconds later with his third touchdown. Just 14 seconds after Ottawa Hills hit paydirt, Smith raced 54 yards into the end zone to hand the visiting Archers a 28-14 edge, sealing the deal in this one. The Archers will host unbeaten Hicksville (3-0) on Friday in their GMC opener.
