VAN WERT -- The fourth week of the 2008 high school football season is complete, and a few area teams ended up in the "W" column, as: Van Wert moved to 3-1, (3-0 WBL) on the season with their third straight win in the league, defeating Celina in a shoot-out 35-27; Delphos St. John's blasted New Bremen 47-16; and Wayne Trace edged Edgerton 23-14. Those area teams that took one on the chin were: Crestview, who remains winless in 2008 with a 13-7 setback to Bluffton; Paulding, who fell to Spencerville 13-8; Antwerp, who was shut down by Hicksville 27-7; and Parkway, who was whitewashed by Anna 48-0. Delphos Jefferson plays Allen East tonight (Saturday) in a NWC matchup at Delphos' Stadium Park Field.

Van Wert 35, Celina 27    

CELINA - VW quarterback Tim Hoverman threw for one score, and then rushed for another touchdown to help lead Van Wert to a 35-27 victory over Western Buckeye League rival Celina.
Hoverman finished with 3-of-9 passing, while sophomore running back Connor Mossillo rushed 15 times for 135 yards, putting the ball in the end zone once. Sam Tindall and Donny Sites also added touchdowns for Van Wert.  Derek Gagle led the Bulldog (0-4, 0-3) offense with 22 completions for 347 yards and four scores. Blake Moran caught two touchdowns and Caleb Fickert and Jamarcus Davis added one each.

Bluffton 13, Crestview 7    

CRESTVIEW - The Crestview Knights scored first, but could not hold off Bluffton in the second half, as the locals fell to the Pirates by a 13-7 count in NWC football action Friday night in Convoy. Zach Devier's 50-yard punt return for Bluffton was the key play which allowed Bluffton to squeak by Crestview. Chad Dulle also ran for a 1-yard touchdown as the Pirates outrushed the Knights 176-140. Crestview had led 7-0 at the break, thanks to Ian Clay's 69-yard TD catch from Stephen Semer. Clay had a total of 77 yards receiving.

Anna 48, Parkway 0    

ROCKFORD - Kameron Knight of Anna rushed for 138 yards on just six carries, including touchdown runs of 65, 53 and 3 yards. The Rockets outgained Parkway 429-236, while Anna quarterback Wes Hunsucker completed eight passes for 154 yards and a pair of scores.

PAULDING ­- The Paulding Panthers dropped a tough 13-8 decision to visiting NWC-foe Spencerville Friday night in Paulding. Tyler Deitering threw for a pair of touchdowns to lead Spencerville. Tyler Keysor (14-yards) and Trevor Arthur (20-yards) each caught a TD pass for the Bearcats (2-2, 1-2). Paulding QB Haden Sholl scored on a 1-yard run late in the game to lead the Panther's (2-2, 1-2) offense, but it was a case of too little, too late.

Wayne Trace 23, Edgerton 14

HAVILAND - The Wayne Trace Raiders have made it two-in-a-row, upending previously undefeated Edgerton by a 23-14 count Friday night in Haviland. Tevin Hale rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns to help the Raiders to the "W". Hale also led the Raiders in receiving with 92 yards and a score as Wayne Trace improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The loss drops Edgerton to 3-1 on the year and 0-1 in conference play.

Delphos St. John's 47 New Bremen 16

DELPHOS - The Delphos St. John's Blue Jays have returned to prominence. After suffering through their first losing season in nearly 20 years in 2007, the Jays are undefeated thus far in 2008.  In the locals 47-16 victory Friday night over an undermanned New Bremen squad, a number of Blue Jays had big nights, including quarterback Wes Ulm who tallied two TD-passes, both to Jay Leininger (27-yards; 38-yards). Sophomore running back Evan Burgei also added two scores, the first on a 2-yard run in the opening quarter and the second one on a 41-yard dash in the final stanza. Jordan Leininger also returned from an early season injury to score twice, once on a 4-yard bolt and the second time on a 17 yard sprint. Matt Brinkman added the Jays final TD scored, as he bulled in from the 4 yard line.
