The column will consist of past sports news in the Van Wert area, covering the time periods of: 1 year ago; 10 years ago; 25 years ago; and 50 years ago, from the present date (weekly). *This week in VW-Area sport’s history… ----- 1 year ago … (2007): *The Lincolnview Lancers defeated Hicksville 4-3 behind the five-hit pitching of Mitch Ringwald. Leading hitters for the Lancers were Danny Brincefield and Mike Evans. *The Van Wert Lady Cougars’ softball team upended Fairview 5-4. Jessica McClellan drove in Brittany Bolenbaugh with the winning run. Madison Kohn was the winning pitcher, while Bolenbaugh picked up the save for the VW girls. *The Crestview Lady Knights topped the first girl’s state softball poll this week. The Lady Knights were followed by Dalton and Sycamore Mohawk. ----- 10 years ago … (1998): *Wayne Trace recently honored their boy’s basketball team. Individuals that received awards was Rod Overmyer (2nd Team GMC; 2nd Team District; and McDonalds All-American Team) and Chris Hinchcliff (1st Team GMC; 1st Team District; Co-MVP of District; and McDonalds All-American Team). *The Van Wert track teams dominated at the Lima Bath Invitational. Kyle Daeger led the Cougar boys with a first place in the 1600m (5:32.81), while Kimberly Minnich led the Lady Cougars with a first place in the 3200m (12:17.12). ----- 25 years ago … (1983): *The Van Wert Cougars boy’s track and field team defeated Ottawa-Glandorf for the first time since 1976 (72-66). Tim Lahmon was the key Cougar performer, finishing first in the 300m low hurdles; second in the 200m low hurdles, while anchoring the first place 800m relay team and the one mile relay team. *Parkway veteran coach Don Black began his 18th season at the helm of the Panthers’ varsity baseball fortunes. Seniors Mark Yoder (P-OF), David Roth (3rd Base), and Doug Stetler (P-1st Base) led the Parkway diamond men. ----- 50 years ago … (1958): *The Willshire Bearcats defeated the Convoy-Union Indians by a 7-4 count on the baseball diamond. Fred James (6 hits, 4 strikeouts, and 2 walks) was the winning pitcher, while Stan Lapham (7 hits, 6 strikeouts, and 3 walks) took the loss. *The Van Del Rockets defeated Delphos Jefferson 5-0 in varsity baseball action. Coach Tom Shockney used three pitchers to get the win: (J. Overholt, Gary Stevens, and Dick Elder). Jim Johns and Dick Elder led the Rockets at the plate with a double and triple, respectively. Dick Thompson collected two of the three Jefferson hits.
