VAN WERT – The VW-Area sports department is introducing a new sports column that will appear each Monday afternoon called: This week in VW-Area Sport’s History.
The column will consist of past sports news in the Van Wert area, covering the time periods of: 1 year ago; 11 years ago; 25 years ago; and 50 years ago, from the present date (weekly). This week in VW-Area sport’s history… ----- 1 year ago … (2007): *In April 2007, Van Wert senior Kyle Klinker signed his letter of intent to play baseball at Tiffin University. Klinker plans to major in business. Kyle’s parents, Shawn and Cheryl Klinker and VW Coaches Charlie Witten and Mick Murphy were present for the signing. ----- 11 years ago … (1997): *Crestview opened the 1997 season with an impressive win over Fort Recovery 12-7. Crestview Coach Jim Wharton was pleased with the way his squad battled back twice from deficits. Justin Hoblet collected the mound win, while teammates Blake Mollenkopf and J.D. Parish led the Crestview offense with doubles. *Van Wert Cougar Kris Hofmann pitched a complete game, but received no help from the VW offense, as the locals fell to Paulding 4-1. VW Head Coach Greg Kulwicki was not pleased with the Cougars offensive production. Andy Ashbaugh, B. J. Fisher, Hofmann and Jason Blue each collected one hit for the VW cause. *Fort Jennings jumped on Lincolnview Lancer pitcher Ethan Rager for five first inning runs to post a 12-3 victory. The Lancers could only muster five hits, as Wayne Longstreth and Rager collected the only extra base hits for the locals. *Crestview handled Fort Recovery in softball action by a 16-1 count. Crestview Coach Owen Pugh was pleased as the Lady Knights collected a total of 22 hits on their way to the easy win. Kylee Miller and Becky Myers led the Lady Knights on offense. ----- 25 years ago … (1983): *VW wrestlers were honored at a season-ending awards banquet. Special award winners for the Van Wert Cougars wrestling team were: Rick Jackson (Cougar of the Year; 4-year letterman award; WBL Champ, Sectional Champ, District Runner-Up, Sixth at State-167 pounds; 28-4 record); Randy Baucom (Most Improved); and Keith Wenning (Most Reversals-27). *The Cougar Tennis Team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 3-0 win over Crestview in a rain-shortened match. Winners for VW were: John Saunier (VW) over Dave Stewart (CV) 6-0, 6-0; Steve Workman (VW) over Glen Hicks (CV) 6-2, 2-6, 6-4; and Vince Barnhart (VW) over Dave Stevens (CV) 6-1, 6-4. ----- 50 years ago … (1958): *Van Wert opened the 1958 baseball season with a tough, 6-5 setback to the Bulldogs of New Haven, Indiana. The Bulldogs won the game with a 3-run sixth inning. VW Coach Clarence Cline started Tom Holmes on the mound. Charley Young came in for relief, pitching the last two innings for VWHS. Winters, Fauble, and Bell (no first names mentioned) led the Cougars on offense. *The Continental Can Budget Bowling Team consisting of: Art Waldron (566 series); Wilbur Shaw (482 series); Curt Mayes (535 series); Cloyd Fruchey (623 series); and Larry Stittsworth (547 series); took top honors in the Van Wert City ABC Tournament at the Olympic Recreation Alleys.
