VAN WERT – The Crestview Knights rallied for 13 combined runs in the third (7) and sixth (6) innings here Tuesday evening to hand the Van Wert Cougars their first setback (16-6) in the ACME Baseball Tournament.
The win puts Crestview in the driver’s seat of the double-elimination tourney, as the Knights have now qualified for a spot in next week’s district tourney at Minster.
Van Wert now plays Delphos St. John’s Wednesday night at Smiley Park in an elimination game. The winner of that game gets Crestview to decide the sectional champion. The Blue Jays defeated Jefferson 13-3 Tuesday night at Stadium Park in Delphos, eliminating the Wildcats from play.
Ian Zollars (allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in 4 2/3) took the win for Crestview, while Tyler Paige (three innings of work in which he allowed nine runs, six hits, four walks and a balk) absorbed the setback for Van Wert.
Leading Crestview at the plate was: Stephen Semer (double), Ian Zollars (2 singles), Brad Miller (2 singles), and Stephen Richard (2 singles). Tyler Putman led VW at the plate with a pair of doubles off the centerfield wall, while teammate Mitch Stauffer also collected a two-bagger.
Crestview will play the Van Wert/St. John's winner at 5 p.m. Thursday at Smiley Park. If the Knights lose that contest, a second game will be played at 7:30 p.m. that evening.
