The Van Wert Cougars could not find enough offensive firepower Friday night, which led to their demise in the Division II boy’s basketball sectional final at Lima Senior, as Elida escaped with a hard-fought 50-40 win.
COLUMBUS – Van Wert’s lone wrestler in the state tournament, junior Conor Massillo, rebounded in the first round of consolations with a pin. In the championship first round, Massillo was pinned. Massillo can finish as high as 3rd place if he keeps on winning in the grueling consolation bracket, One more loss and he is finished for the season.

Crestview 57, Spencerville 45
The Crestview Knights avenged an earlier season setback Wednesday evening by defeating NWC nemesis Spencerville 57-45 in Division IV boy’s sectional basketball action at Van Wert.
The Van Wert Cougars are accomplishing what every coach desires for his team – hit your peak at tournament time. Van Wert is doing just that, as the Cougars rolled past St. Marys 74-43 in the Lima Senior Division II sectional opener Tuesday night.

Lincolnview 60, Bluffton 57
Jeremy Morris scored 19 points and grabbed 4 steals to help the Lancers beat the host Pirates in an NWC game. Anthony Simpson added 15 points and 8 rebounds for Lincolnview (3-17, 3-6). Matt Gillett had 21 points for Bluffton (3-17, 1-8), Kyle Siefker scored 14 points and Levi Gleason added 13 points.
Van Wert 66, Shawnee 56
Most coaches will tell you that one of the most important games of the season is the final one. Playing well in that game, can usually springboard a team deep into the tournament. If that’s the case, then Cougar fans can expect to watch a few more games this season, as Van Wert defeated WBL-bully Shawnee 66-56 Friday night in the season final for both squads.
