VWMS girls basketball team opens season

By: VWMS Coach Brad Doidge VAN WERT -- The Van Wert Girls Middle School basketball teams opened up the season this past weekend versus the Lady Big Green of Ottoville. The ten o'clock tip-off at the Van Wert Goedde Building brought back the old Cougars Den excitement as the Van Wert 7th grade jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter. By halftime the Lady Cougars increased their lead to 21-7 at the break. All thirteen members of the squad saw action in the first half with much of the scoring dispersed among eight different players. The second half was pretty much even as the Cougar squad maintained their halftime lead as each team scored 13 second half points. Again all 13 members saw the floor and each contributed in their own way. The final was set at 34-20 for the Lady Cougars first victory of the season. The 8th grade squad for Van Wert took the floor against a very talented and tall Ottoville team and fell behind early on only to claw back into the contest right before halftime and trail by a couple at 15-13. A big third quarter, set up by an aggressive full court press, increased the lead for the Lady Big Green. The Cougars played better against their opposition in the fourth but lost their opener by a count of 39-22. All twelve members of the team saw court time. Both teams will be back in action next Tuesday as they will entertain a squad from Lima South. Tip-off will be at 5:00 in the Van Wert Middle School Gymnasium.
