In a game with a the feeling of a tournament atmosphere, the Lady Mustangs led 19-17 at the end of the first half.

SARDINIA - Holding the Eastern Brown Lady Warriors to zero points in the third quarter, the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs fought off a strong surge by EB in the fourth quarter, defeating their Southern Hills League foe 45-36.

In a game with a the feeling of a tournament atmosphere, the Lady Mustangs led 19-17 at the end of the first half.

After the opening 16 minutes, the defense of the Lady Mustangs came out in full force in the third quarter, holding EB to zero points.

At one point in the second half, the Lady Mustangs extended their lead by 13 points.

“They put a nice run on us in the fourth quarter, but we answered them with big shots in the fourth to keep the lead,” Hatten said. “

L-C won the fourth quarter 19-17.

The Lady Mustangs (3-0) went 11-of-16 from the free-throw line in the final quarter. Cali Hatten went 4-of-4 from the line in the fourth.

“Cali and Lindsey Hawk made some big free throws in the fourth for us,” Lynchburg-Clay head coach Linda Hatten said. “It was a great game all around, but our free throw shooting helped us in the end. This was a good win for us.

“I felt like we put forth a good defensive effort against Eastern,” Hatten said. “Tonight the girls answered the call.”

L-C senior Kelsey Lewis led all scorers with a game-high 15 points, followed by sophomore Hannah Blankenship with 12.

“Kelsey (Lewis) did a nice job guarding their two tall girls,” Hatten said. “We also played good interior defense.”

Junior Cali Hatten finished with a team-high 12 rebounds, adding eight points and three assists.

Amber Yockey led EB with 10 points.

The Lady Mustangs, who are 2-0 in the league, will host SHL foe Manchester on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
