Sunday, 30 November 2008

Lehman got its first girls basketball season under coach Mark Lindenauer off to a memorable start Saturday at home.

Not only did the Lady Cavs roll to an 84-34 victory over outmanned Bradford, they also lit up the gym with 15 three-pointers.

Freshman Terra Vanover led the long-range assault with five threes, just one short of the school record. That led to her leading the way in scoring with 21 points.

Saturday, 29 November 2008

MASSILLON, Ohio (AP) — Delphos St. John’s reached its ultimate goal a year early on Friday with a big boost from quarterback Wes Ulm.

The junior rushed for 198 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries to lead the Blue Jays (13-2) to their fifth Ohio Division VI high school football championship with a 34-14 win over Bascom Hopewell-Loudon.

Coming off a disappointing 2-8 season, loaded with underclassmen and unranked in the final regular-season polls, the Blue Jays entered the playoffs considered a year away from being a true championship contender.

Alter beats Steubenville for state title PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 29 November 2008

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Seniors Austin Boucher and Chris Borland combined to lead Kettering Archibishop Alter to its first Ohio high school football championship with a 21-6 win over Steubenville in the Division IV title game at Friday.

The Knights (13-2) capped what should have been an undefeated season with a dominating performance at Fawcett Stadium. Alter was forced to forfeit their first two wins of the season for using an ineligible player, but kept winning anyway.

Steubenville (14-1), was ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press final regular-season poll behind defending champion Coldwater, which lost in the regional finals two weeks ago to Kettering Alter. The Knights were ranked No. 5 despite having two lopsided wins turned into 1-0 forfeit losses.

Elder, St. Ignatius have won 11 times PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 28 November 2008

Doug Ramsey looks at the two teams competing for the Division I state title and says the amazing thing is not their differences but how much they have in common.

“This is two fairly similar teams playing against each other,” Cincinnati Elder’s coach said, comparing his squad with Cleveland St. Ignatius. “Sure, the offenses are different. The defense are different. But both have similar kinds of players.”

It takes a certain kind of player to produce a combined 11 (nine by St. Ignatius, two for Elder) state playoff titles. Only a select few schools collect those types of players — hoard them, even. And several of those schools are back at the 37th annual football finals this Friday and Saturday in Stark County.

COLUMBUS — Erick Howard is turning his life around. Being the 22nd winner of The Associated Press Mr. Football award is just a sign along the way that he’s on the right road.

Howard, announced Tuesday as the choice of a media panel from around the state in one of the closest votes ever, is a tough running back at North Canton Hoover. His numbers on the field are impressive. That he’s trying to change direction off it is far more important.
