TROTWOOD — Before the Good Samaritan SportsPlex crowd could exhale, Sidney jumped out to a 14-0 advantage 46 seconds into the game on two Jack Foy end sweeps for 50 and 35 yards, respectively. If that wasn’t enough, Trotwood bounced back with a two-play, 67-yard quick score to make it 14-8 30 seconds later. Everybody on the field was playing like their hair was on fire.

Once the smoke settled though, it was Trotwood with the big play of the game, stopping Jack Foy on a two-point conversion with just 18 seconds left to escape with a 35-34 victory Friday in Greater Western Ohio Conference North Division football action.

“We wanted to win the game,” a dejected Sidney coach Dan Cairns said of his decision to go for two. “I thought we had the momentum. I called timeout and the look in the kids’ eyes said go for it. So I thought screw it, let’s go for it. The kids were hungry for it.”

Cairns added, “After Trotwood called timeout, we changed the play. We went with a different look with an unbalanced line out of a power I formation. I will second guess myself all night.”

The heartbreaking loss drops Sidney to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the division. The Jackets host 4-3 Piqua Friday.

The Sidney running game was clicking on all cylinders (Foy 138 yards, TJ Golden 104 yards, Josh Topp 46 yards, Tevin White 45 yards) as the Jackets accumulated 320 yards on the ground.

“Jack be nimble, Jack be quick” Foy slinked and slithered for 123 of his 138 yards in the first half with two TDs. “Oh my” is the operative phrase when Foy touches the football. Through seven games Foy has rushed for 717 yards. He is on pace to reach 1,000 yards. Not bad considering he only carries the ball 12 times per game.

The last time a Sidney running back rushed for 1,000 yards was 2003 when Zach Guey ran for 1,185 yards.

Trailing 28-8 after one quarter, Trotwood scored on their next three possessions to tie the game 28-28 at the break.

The third quarter was a scoreless battle as both teams beat themselves with penalties. In all, 29 penalties for 230 yards were assessed to both teams.

After Trotwood took a 35-28 lead with 7:03 left in the game, Sidney executed an 80-yard drive. It took 17 plays and burned the clock down to :18 seconds before QB Alex Lochard zipped a six-yard TD strike to Zach Michael. After the conversion failed, Sidney recovered the on-side kick, but couldn’t capitalize as time expired.

Cairns concluded, “Penalties were a momentum killer. It was an uphill battle. The bottom line, we didn’t execute.”
