By WADE LINVILLE Sports editor, The Ripley Bee The Ripley-Union-Lewis-Huntington Blue Jays played host to Whiteoak High School Friday night, to claim a 34-31 victory over the Wildcats, a league win that didn’t come easy. Friday’s league win upped the Jays Southern Hills League record to 2-2 on the season and their overall record to 4-4.
The league bout with the Wildcats was slow going when referring to scoring, with the Jays holding a 21-16 lead at halftime. Just one basket fell for the Jays in the third quarter, but to their benefit the Wildcats managed only three field goals in the third. Going into the fourth quarter the Jays held tight to a 23-22 lead. The Jays shot for double figures again in the fourth, outscoring the Wildcats 11-9 to bring home the win. Leading the way in scoring for the Jays in the win over Whiteoak was junior Dylan Johnson with 10 points. Ripley senior Derrick Jolley ended the night with six points, while sophomore teammates Ravye Williams and Demarco Washington shot for five points each. Williams dished for five assists in the win. The loss to the Jays dropped the Wildcats’ overall record to 2-5 on the season and their SHL record to 1-3. The Jays are back in action Jan. 16 in a road game against the Fayetteville-Perry Rockets.
