VAN WERT -- The prep roundup from Firday night in the VW-Area is listed below.
Van Wert 40, St. Marys 37
ST. MARYS — Welcome back Jacob Bagley. That statement was on the lips of many Cougar fans Friday night, as Bagley returned from a knee injury suffered in the Defiance game to lead VW to a 40-37 win over St. Marys.
Bagley scored 18 points for the Cougars (6-8, 4-2), with 10 of those coming in the first quarter as VW bolted to an 11-0 advantage. Overall, Bagley tallied 15 of his game-high 18 points in the first half, as Van Wert corralled the Roughriders and built a 28-19 edge at the break. As a team, Van Wert connected on six three-pointers, four of them from Bagley.
Unfortunately for the Cougar faithful, the VW hardwood men cooled off in the second half, scoring only 12 points as St. Marys (1-13, 1-4), behind Jake Taylor’s 16 points and Adam Leininger’s 11 markers, made their move. The Roughriders opened the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run to get back in the game and actually took a 37-34 lead with just over four minutes remaining.
Fortunately, VW had one more run in their gas tank, finishing the game off on a 6-0 tear to collect the win, thanks to baskets by Bagley (his fifth 3-pointer), Evan Hammons, and a free throw from Jake Olson. Olson finished the game with six points and 11 rebounds. Overall, VW won the board wars 34-23.
