Sunday, 16 March 2008
COLUMBUS – The Ottawa-Glandorf Titans defeated Sugarcreek Garaway 62-44 Saturday evening to win the Division III Boys Basketball State Championship at Value City Arena on the campus of The Ohio State University.

O-G combined a tenacious defensive effort along with an opportunistic offense to run away with the win. From the start, one sensed that Garaway was overmatched, as the Titans forced seven first quarter turnovers and bolted out to leads of 9-1, 16-3, and 18-12. The Titans kept up the pressure at both ends of the floor in the second stanza, ending the first half on a 17-11 run to take a commanding 35-23 halftime lead.

O-G came out in the third quarter and sealed the deal, starting the second half on a 14-8 mini-run to increase their advantage to a 49-31 bulge. Both teams tallied 13 fourth-quarter points. Overall, O-G forced Garaway into a total of 19 turnovers, with 13 miscues coming in the first half.

In the double-digit scoring ledger, Jake Meyer was the go-to-guy for O-G, as the senior dropped in a game-high 21 points, which included three 3-pointers. Teammate Justin Schomaeker contributed a solid 15 points, while Taylor Kuhlman added nine markers also for the Titans’ cause. Leading scorer for Garaway was Tyler Gerber, who tallied 15 points.

With the “W”, O-G completes its championship season at 23-5, while Garaway closes its campaign at 24-4 with the setback.
