O-G Titans defeat Anna 65-57; play for state title PDF Print E-mail

COLUMBUS – The Ottawa-Glandorf Titans advanced to the Division III state championship on Friday afternoon by defeating number two-ranked Anna 65-57 in the boys state basketball tournament at Value City Arena in Columbus.

O-G bolted to a commanding 10-0 lead at the start of the contest and the Titans (22-5) never trailed in the game against the Rockets (25-2), moving onto the state finals for the third time in school history. O-G will meet Sugarcreek Garaway in the state finals on Saturday night at 5:15 p.m.

Even though the Titans had a quick 10-0 start, Anna was able to recover momentarily, as the Rockets tied the game at 16-16 with 5:23 left in the second quarter. That was the only tie of the game though, as the Titans never trailed again. Justin Schomaeker scored 12 of his game-high 26 points in the first half as the Titans built a 31-24 advantage at the break.

In the second half, the Titans were able to maintain a seven-point advantage throughout, and heading into the fourth quarter led 45-37. Anna then cut their deficit to only three-points at 55-52 midway through the final eight minutes of action, but Schomaeker and Jake Meyer gave the Titans a much needed cushion, as the pair connected on a couple of vital shots. Meyer connected on three 3-pointers and Schomaeker tallied a total of 14 points in the second half, as O-G overcame a poor shooting night at the line (5 of 14). Meyer and Schomaeker each scored with less than a minute to play to keep the Rockets at bay and send the Titans to the state title game.

Meyer added eight rebounds to go along with his 15 points, while Schomaeker added six boards. Naseman led Anna with 14 points, while Kreg Elsass had four points and nine boards. O-G will seek its second state title after winning the Division II title in 2004.
