WAPAKONETA – The Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays (11-2) and the Sidney Lehman Catholic Cavaliers (11-1) will do battle Friday night (7:30 p.m.) at Wapakoneta’s Harmon Field in a Division VI state semifinal contest with the winner gaining a berth in the state finals at Massillon.
VAN WERT -- The Van Wert Girls Cross Country team held its annual awards banquet recently at Willow Bend Country Club. The team finished the season with an overall record of 105 - 50. They were second in the Western Buckeye League with a record of 26-5. Sixteen of the 19 girls on the team received varsity certificates and 95 percent earned scholar-athlete awards. Special individual trophies were awarded to Erika Smith for Most Improved, Taylor Greve for Leader of the Pack and Lauren Taylor for MVP.
VAN WERT -- The Van Wert High School girls' tennis team held its annual awards banquet recently. The team finished fifth overall in the Western Buckeye League and had a winning record of 7-4 for the year.
"This was one of the best seasons for the Van Wert girls and all of the girls played their hearts out and really gave me 100 percent the whole year," Coach Mitch Price said.
Price thanked the seniors for their four years on the team, noting they would be missed next year, but adding that they are leaving the tennis program in great shape.
Those earning special awards included Brooke Keber (most improved junior varsity player), Whitney Owens (most improved varsity player), and Kaylee Stanski (most valuable player).
The Coach's Award went to the following players: Owens, Stanski, Kristen Schlatter, Terry Simson, Morgan Stemen, Melissa Bloomfield and Laurie Liatos.
"It was a great year and I am looking forward to next year, because we will be a contender in the WBL," Coach Price added in closing.
VAN WERT -- The YWCA of Van Wert County is accepting applications for a full time Case Manager/Housing Director. This individual will oversee the Transitional Housing Program and Emergency Shelter. Candidates must have a 4 year degree in the social service field and two years case management experience.
