The Miami Trace Lady Panthers Saturday concluded a game suspended Thursday with Fairfield Union in the Division II Southeast District softball tournament. Fairfield Union was leading 1-0 Thursday on the strength of a home run by McCafferty when the game was halted due to continuing rains. The game was played to its conclusion on a windy Saturday afternoon at Miami Trace High School with Fairfield Union posting a 7-0 win.
It was disappointing end to a season that saw the Lady Panthers go 15-6 and win a co-championship with Madison Plains (with a record of 10-2). In addition to McCafferty’s home run in the top of the first Thursday, Fairfield Union added two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh, while the Lady Panthers collected just two hits and committed four errors. In the fifth for the Lady Panthers, Jennifer Carr hit a single to left. Olivia Mick came in to pinch run. Kayce Elzey grounded into a fielder’s choice and Cara Vergamini came in to run for her. Nancy Coulter followed by drilling a hard smash back at the pitcher who turned the double play to end that potential threat. Jesse Furniss had an infield hit for the Panthers in the sixth, but was out attempting to steal second. The Lady Panthers went out in order in the seventh to end the game. In the sixth for Fairfield Union, a walk, a triple, an error and a fielder’s choice plated two runs. In the seventh for the visitors, a walk, a bunt single, a sacrifice, three singles to the outfield and an error plated four runs. “Fairfield Union is a fine team,” Miami Trace head coach Terry Smith said. “They have a nice pitcher. They played fundamentally sound. I don’t feel they’re seven runs better than us, however. “We helped them turn a 1-0 lead into what turned out to be a blowout,” Smith said. “Against their pitcher, we weren’t going to come back and beat them today. “We made some mistakes on the basepaths,” Smith said. “We hit some hard shots. We would have had another hit, but a ball that dropped into shallow right field resulted in them getting the force at second, because our runner had a wait and see if the ball would be caught. “These things come into play when the game is 1-0,” Smith said. “If we had been able to score there when it was still 1-0, I think we might have been able to rattle their pitcher some. But she stayed poised and made her pitches. And we just didn’t come through and make the plays we should have made.” Miami Trace missed a potential chance to score in the third inning Thursday when a baserunner slipped coming around second base and made it safely to third on what turned out to be a double by Nancy Coulter. With runners at second and third with no out, the Panthers were not able to score. Blake was the winning pitcher for Fairfield Union. She struck out 12 Lady Panthers and walked one. Elzey suffered the loss for the Panthers. She walked two and struck out six. Three of the seven runs were earned. “Blake had seven strikeouts Thursday,” Smith said. “Today we put the ball in play. Their shortstop made a nice play on a ball hit by (Priscilla) Strayer. “We had a nice season,” Smith said. “We really didn’t go where we could have. The games we lost were mainly when we didn’t execute the fundamentals of the game. “We had a good group of seniors and had a lot of fun this year,” Smith said. Miami Trace says thanks and farewell to seven seniors: Jennifer Carr, Nancy Coulter, Lindy Berry, Priscilla Strayer, Jesse Furniss, Cara Vergamini and Tracy Bryan.
