WILLIAMSPORT — The Miami Trace Lady Panther varsity softball team got the 2008 season off to a tough start Tuesday afternoon as they lost a non-league game at Westfall High School, 12-6. The Lady Panthers committed seven errors which led to nine unearned runs for the Mustangs. “The errors just killed us,” Miami Trace head coach Terry Smith said. “We know and the girls know that we are a better team than we showed tonight. It’s disappointing to start the season with a loss, but the girls will step up in our next game.”
Miami Trace hosts London today at 5 p.m. As for Tuesday’s game, junior Kayce Elzey started and took the loss for the Lady Panthers on the mound. She pitched six innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits. She walked four and struck out three. Redman was the winning pitcher for the Mustangs. She worked seven innings, with three earned runs, six hits, two walks and eight strikeouts. Miami Trace got off to a good start, posting two runs in the top of the first inning. Olivia Mick led off the game with a single. She stole second and after one out was recorded she moved to third on a passed ball. Priscilla Strayer struck out but reached base on a passed ball by the catcher. With Elzey at bat, a passed ball allowed Mick to score. Elzey walked and Cara Vergamini came in to pinch run. She stole second and Strayer soon scored on another passed ball. Westfall sent eight batters to the plate scoring five runs in the bottom of the first. Miami Trace committed three errors in the frame and allowed one walk. Westfall had just one hit in the inning taking a 5-2 advantage. After a scoreless second inning for both teams, Miami Trace put a run on the board in the third. Jessie Furniss laced a triple to right field and after the next batter was retired, Jennifer Carr lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Furniss. In the fourth inning, with one out, Andi Strahler reached on an error and Tracy Bryan singled. Lindy Berry bunted successfully for the sacrifice, moving both runners along. Mick reached on an error that allowed Strahler to score to make it 5-4. In the fourth for the Mustangs, a single, a sacrifice and two ground outs scored a run to make it 6-4. in the fifth, the Mustangs had a runner reach on an error and later score on another error to make it 7-4. Miami Trace nearly came back to tie in the top of the sixth. Taylor Stockwell led off the sixth with a walk for the Panthers. With one out, Bryan singled and Casey Lugenbeel came in to run for her. Berry was then out on a close play at first that allowed both runners to advance. Mick followed with a triple for two RBI making it 7-6. Furniss lined sharply to third to end the inning. Westfall batted around in the sixth, chalking up five runs. Miami Trace went out in order in the top of the seventh. Notes: Carr at catcher threw out two runners attempting to steal in the game for Miami Trace.
