Arrows rush past Panthers, 38-7 PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 06 September 2008

Tecumseh head coach Kent Massie had a great day Friday.

Not only did his team, the Arrows, invade Panther Stadium and post a 38-3 win over the Panthers, but his wife, Mary, gave birth to their first child, a son.

It almost made Massie late for the game Friday, but he made it and the Arrows improved to 3-0 on the season on the day the Massie’s welcomed a son into the world.

For the Panthers, not too much went right Friday night, a night that saw the rains come and stick around for most of the contest.

Tom Armstrong did rush for over 100 yards (104 on 26 carries) for the third game in a row.

Senior Brett Garland had the points for the Panthers on a 30-yard field goal coming with 4:53 remaining in the third quarter.

The Arrows rushed the ball extremely well Friday, picking up 361 yards on 38 carries for an average of 9.5 yards per carry.

Dustin Holmes had 111 yards on eight carries for the Arrows while Kyle Sanning burned the Panthers for 122 yards on 12 carries and three touchdowns.

“We have no excuses,” Miami Trace head coach Mike Bernard said. “They were the better football team tonight and they came out here and proved it.”

Miami Trace trailed 21-0 at the half.

One score was set up when Tecumseh blocked a Miami Trace punt and took possession inside the Panther five-yard line.

The Arrows had another short field late in the first half, but penalites helped back them up and out of a scoring possibility.

“We talked to our kids at halftime about showing up in the second half and playing hard every play and they did that,” Bernard said. “We can’t ask any more of our kids than that.

“We made some mistakes tonight,” Bernard said. “We’re going to sit down over the weekend and figure out how to correct those.

“We’re proud of the way the kids performed,” Bernard said. “They’re coming off the field with their heads high. They’re staying together as a football team.

“The only goal we cannot achieve now is going 10-0,” Bernard said. “All of the other goals are still on the table. There’s a lot of football remaining to be played. We have one more big non-league game (next week at Jonathan Alder) and then we head into our league.

“We’re going to learn from our mistakes and come out and try harder next time,” Bernard said.

“I thought our kids played very well,” Massie said. “They played aggressive and hard. We had some penalties there that we need to clean up. But other than that, we have a fast team and a strong team. We have some special kids and some talented players. They did a good job tonight against a very good Miami Trace team.”

Tecumseh, now 3-0 on the year, has a cross-over game at home Friday against Urbana. Urbana beat Springfield Shawnee Friday, 28-7.

Miami Trace is at 3-0 Jonathan Alder Friday night. Alder shut out St. Paris Graham Friday, 13-0.
