Page 2 of 2 By STEPHEN FORSHA The Times-Gazette LYNCHBURG - Defensive miscues and costly errors were the downfall of the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs, as the West Union Lady Dragons capitalized on their mistakes, defeating L-C 11-0 in five innings on Monday.
The Lady Dragons (2-0, 2-0) were led by a strong pitching effort by freshman Alexandra Bowles. Bowles, who made her first varsity appearance in the first inning, earned the victory for the Lady Dragons, finishing with six strikeouts. The freshman allowed two hits and no runs, allowing one walk.
"Alexandria (Bowles) did a good job for us in her first varsity outing," West Union coach Troy Fields said.
Thomnessa Fields started the game first West Union, walking the first two batters.
The Lady Mustangs (0-2, 0-2) began the game by keeping West Union scoreless behind the pitching of Brittany Holden, who struck out the first two Lady Dragon batters.
West Union answered back in the top half of the second inning, scoring seven runs.
"We had one poor inning on defense and it hurt us," Lynchburg-Clay coach Michelle Truman said. "We had too many defensive errors and left too many runners on base."
Leading the Lady Dragons at the plate were Cierra Taylor, who finished 2-for-2, with three RBIs, followed by Cary Colvin, who gained two RBIs on three hits.
Mia Hayslip earned two RBIs for West Union, while Kristi Beasley went a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate.
Ashley Copley and Bowles also each earned a hit.
The Lady Dragons extended their lead to 8-0 in the top part of the fourth and 11-0 after the top half of the fifth inning was completed.
Taking the loss was Holden. The L-C hurdler finished allowing 11 runs, (one earned). The Lady Mustangs committed 10 errors in the field. Holden finished with three strikeouts and three walks. The Lady Mustangs also allowed three passed balls.
Taylor Allen and Lynette Matthews earned hits for L-C, with Allen going 1-for-1.
"We have a young team, but I did see improvement from our first game," Truman said.
