I heard on the radio this morning about one of the Clinton Massie football players who got in trouble before the year started transfering to Waynesville. Does anyone know if this move was bc he was in trouble at massie? and I know that there were a couple boys that got in trouble are any of the rest of them planning on leaving massie?

That's the rumor I heard as well - don't know who as I'm not even familiar with exactly which kids got in trouble.  Actually heard that 2 of them transferred.  But you know how the rumor mill is....  If it's true then I say good ridance...  Massie will be fine without them.  They looked great Friday night against Waynesville.

Only one boy transfered, im not going to kick any names around and spill the beans on here, im sure you can find it elswhere. But he didn't even get to dress friday night. Waynesville decided that they wanted to be sure he was eligible before allowing him to play. And yes he did leave because he got in trouble and was going to be suspended for 3 games.

That brings me to my next question.... Are these rules especially the new reformed rule on alcohal abuse which I believe was the whole problem in this particular situation any good if the students are just able to move to advoid them? Should there be another rule made also to prevent this?

The rule, i believe, for all sports is suspension from 30 percent of your team's season for the first infraction. With football, it is the first three games. The question above is interestiong, however. If a school steps up and does the right thing by suspending these kids, shouldn't the school they transfer to enforce the same rules? It is kind of a cop out to just transfer to get away from a problem you created for yourself and parents need to step up and make their kids take responsibility for this. If this were my kid, and even if he weren't participating in the banned activity, i would still make him take it and ride the pine for three games just for being around the situation. It would be intersting to see what the OHSAA says about these situations... i will work on that.

The rule was reformed from get caught using tobacco, drinking alcohal, or smoking you were suspended for 1 week of games (so with football that would be a game or volleyball how ever many games are in that week), placed on probation for 1 year to the date of being caught and if caught again while on probation you're finish with all sports. Also the contract that student athletes sign saying that they will obey the rules was only in affect during the respective sport's season. While with the new rule, get caught using the before mentioned you are suspended for 30% of your sport's season (football would be 3 games) put on probation for 1 year to the date of being caught and 2nd offense once again you're finished. Also the contract that you sign is in affect year-a-round.
I believe that is the just of the rule there are prolly some things I left out but that is most of it. I hope I made it understandable, sometimes I have a hard time typing out what I really want to say or mean lol Grin.
I also wanted to add that I am not trying to get anything started by asking what the point of the rule is, just wanting to hear people's opinions. For those of you that know me prolly know that I, myself violated this rule and was suspended for the first game of football my senior year so I kind of understand what the kid from massie is feeling... I couldnt imagine what I would have done having to miss 3 games of my senior year instead of just one.

fb, i don't think this rule has anything to do with the ohsaa. i could be wrong but my understanding is that each schools administrators establish the guide lines for this type of disipline concerning athletes and then have it approved by the local boe and then placed in the school athletic handbook. the paperwork that is signed i believe is generated by the ohsaa.
however, sclark should be able to track this down. i am sure she has more contacts than most of us.

fb, i typed this once and don't think it went through. so don't lol if it is not word for word. old age causes this.

sometimes i suprise myself. here is what the ohssa web site states.

                                bylaws
section 5. conduct,character,disipline

4-5-1  in matters pertaining to personal conduct in which athletic contests and their related activities are not involved, the school itself is to be the sole judge as to whether the student may participate in athletics.

it goes on and states that suspensions and expulsions must be honored by member schools. the athlete can't escape these.

in the case you are talking about it seems that 1 school might have the 30% rule and another might not.

Yes I do realize that it is the responsibility of the school to make up their own guidelines, I believe it was Ms. Clark that said something about the OHSAA. I also realize that every school may have different rules when it comes to this situation... but I do believe that Massie like East Clinton has the 30% rule is place... someone correct me if I am wrong. But thank you for the information you supplied.

Maybe a better question is should the OHSAA be the ones to make the rules for character and disapline instead of the individual schools? If it were that way it might eliminate that big loop hole of "get in trouble, you can just transfer."

Clinton Massie has had to rule in since atleast 2001. I personally got into trouble and was told the rule had been changed that year.
