COLVIN WINS, LONDON FINISHES 5TH
"I knew it was going to be a bad day when our 285 pounder got a concussion while warming up" said Coach David Kennedy.
Injuries hurt the London Red Raiders chances of a higher finish at the Harry Steel Invitational over the weekend. Injuries to Jeremiah Jones and Sean Kelly left London with 4 open weight classes, as the Red Raiders finished fifth on the day. We were "two injuries from second or third" place, thought Kennedy.
The brightest spot for London was Ronnie Colvin, who won the 103 pound weight class. This is Colvin's second consecutive tournament win. Tony Morris (140) and his brother, Mike (112) each had a runner up finish. Other placers for London were Pablo Feltz (125) and Jones (145), each with fourth place finishes. Our "wrestlers continue to get better throughout the season" said Kennedy.
The Logan Elm Chieftans battled Northeastern for the top spot most of the day, and came out on top in the end, with a team score of 170.5. Logan Elm had 5 wrestlers win their weight class, including 3 repeat Champions. Corey Johnson won the 112 class after winning at 103 last year, Daniel Gifford was the 135 Champion after gaining victory at 130 last year, and Justin Duehran captured another title at 215. Other Chieftan champs were Shane Gifford at 140 and Dustin Dexter at 171.
Matt Taylor led the Northeastern Jets with his repeat Championship at 160. Ryan Krugh (285) improved upon his runner up finish last year and took the crown in his class. The Jets also had four runners up on the day, to stay in contention to the end, finishing second with 155.5 points.
The Blue Lions of Washington Court House were led by repeat Champion Blaine Bailey at 152. Three more wrestlers finished second in their weight class, helping the Blue Lions finish third, at 108 points.
Corey Dulaney the 145 champ helped Whitehall stay close to Washington Court House with a total of 107.5 team points.
Paint Valley had two champs. Clark Graves (119) moved up from a second place finish last year, and Caleb Cottrill (125) won his class.
Dustin Osterloh of Greenfield McClain (130) and James Kramer (189) of Whetstone captured the other weight classes.
"This tournament gets better every year with more and more State qualifiers" wrestling at the Harry Steel, mused Kennedy after the day was done.
London is back in action this Wednesday at home, in a Tri meet with Greenfield McClain and Columbus Briggs. Wrestling starts at 6PM.
