Lehman got its first girls basketball season under coach Mark Lindenauer off to a memorable start Saturday at home. Not only did the Lady Cavs roll to an 84-34 victory over outmanned Bradford, they also lit up the gym with 15 three-pointers. Freshman Terra Vanover led the long-range assault with five threes, just one short of the school record. That led to her leading the way in scoring with 21 points.
Older sister Brooke Vanover had 17, Christie Freytag added 16, and Brittney Homan finished with 11. “It was great to get a win in the opener, but this game does not define us,” said Lindenauer, whose team faces a much tougher test Saturday at Minster. The Lady Redskins forced marion into 36 turnovers with their pressure, put up 71 shots in the game, and had 20 offensive rebounds. “There were a lot of questions marks going into the season and I think we had a lot of them answered Saturday,” said Loramie coach Carla Siegel. “Janel (Olberding) and Clair (Ruhenkamp) did a phenomenal job with their flood game, and Clair had nine rebounds to go with her points, and seven of them were offensive. She had 14 points in the third quarter, and most came on the offensive boards. And our seniors really stepped up. We used nine players and every girl did her job.” Ruhenkamp finished with a game-high 21 points, and Olberding had four steals and five assists to go with 18 points for Loramie. Andrea Holthaus had nine points and nine rebounds and Krista Watercutter had nine points and six steals. Loramie is in county play Tuesday at 2-0 Russia. Reserve score: Loramie 48, Marion 31. —— Lady Jackets fall to Fairborn Sidney had its first home game of the young season Saturday at the high school, but couldn’t come up with a win, dropping a 47-36 verdict to Fairborn in a game the Lady Jackets led 21-14 at the half. Sidney fell to 0-2 on the season with Springboro coming to town for a game Wednesday night in Greater Western Ohio Conference crossover action. Sidney got off to an excellent start, leading 11-6 after a quarter and increasing the margin to seven at the half. But as it turned out, the Lady Jackets were outscored by 18 points in the second half, giving Fairborn a win in its season opener. The Lady Firebirds outscored Sidney 18-10 in the third quarter to take a 32-29 lead, and pulled away from there. Marissa Clark had a big day from long range for Sidney, sinking five three-pointers to lead the Lady Jackets with 15 points. Sara Karas added nine points. The Lady Raiders, who edged Sidney in overtime Friday, rolled to an easy 47-24 victory over Mississinawa at home on Saturday to stand at 2-0 heading into county play Tuesday at home against Fort Loramie. Russia led just 12-7 after one quarter, but opened up a 28-10 bulge at the half and coasted from there. Brooke Gariety had 14 points to lead Russia, and both Roni Homan and Kristi Borchers added nine points. Reserve game: Russia won, score not available —— Bremen wins title NEW BREMEN — New Bremen captured the championship of its own tip-off tourney on Saturday, using a big third quarter to pull away from New Knoxville and post a 50-34 victory. The Lady Cardinals are now 2-0 and Knoxville 1-1. Bremen led just 21-17 at the half, but outscored the Lady Rangers 15-5 in the third period to open up a good lead. Stacy Timmerman led the Lady Cardinals again, hitting five field goals and 9-of-13 free throws to finish with 18. One of the field goals was a three. She also pulled down seven rebounds, three at the offensive end. Taylor Jones added 13 for the Lady Cardinals, and Michelle Griesdorn led Bremen to a 32-15 advantage on the boards with nine rebounds. For New Knoxville, Casey Horstman had 14 points, and Morgan Reineke had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Knoxville could hit just 12 of 40 shots from the field for 30 percent. Bremen was 16-for-37 from the field, 43 percent, and hit 16-for-21 from the line, 76 percent. Bremen hosts Celina on Saturday. New Knoxville is at Versailles in conference play on Thursday. The win puts the Lady Jets at 2-0 on the season heading into county play Tuesday at 1-0 Houston. Davidson spearheaded a Fairlawn comeback in the second half by scoring 11 of her 15 points over the final two periods. Shroyer was a model of consistency, meanwhile, getting a field goal in every quarter. All four of her makes were from three-point range, and she added a pair of free throws to finish with 14. “I was proud of the girls,” said Fairlawn coach Herb Laughman. “This game was definitely won with defense. The girls are really buying in to what we’re doing, and this was a good win.
