Lehman posted a big win in boys soccer, for a couple of reasons.

One, it was the first time the Cavaliers have ever beaten Franklin-Monroe. And two, and more importantly, it may have nailed down the No. 1-seed for the postseason tournament.

The Cavaliers got a goal with just two minutes remaining to pull out a 2-1 thriller over the Jets at Lehman Tuesday, the winning goal coming on a superb individual effort by Wade Schroeder.

“He just willed it in,” said head coach Tony Schroeder. “He took the ball at about midfield, dribbled past three defenders, then beat the goalie and shot into an open net from about 10 yards out.”

It capped a comeback effort by the Cavs, who found themselves trailing 1-0 at the end of the first period.

There was cause for concern at that point, because it marked seven straight periods the Cavaliers had gone without scoring a goal.

But about 10 minutes into the second period, Mike McMahon stole the ball and dribbled to the 18.He passed off to Adam Freytag, who finished it off to break the scoring drought.

“It was a physical game, with hard play,” said coach Schroeder. “The kids knew what was on the line and they came out in the second half and played well. I think once we got that first goal, the kids got their confidence back.”

Lehman outshot the Jets 24-15 for the game, and goalie Dan Westerheide finished with 11 saves.

“That should get us the No. 1 seed,” said Schroeder, referring to the tournament draw that comes up Sunday. “That’s why it was a big game.”

The Cavaliers are now 9-3-1 and F-M 8-3-2.

Botkins wins 2-1

BOTKINS — Botkins coach Kevin Lynch might have been hoping for a Lehman loss, so his team could grab the top seed.

As it stands, he thinks his Trojans will be No. 2 after their 2-1 win over Newton Tuesday night at Community Park.

“Lehman will probably be the top seed, and that’s probably how it should be,” said Lynch.

The Trojans ran their record to 9-2-3 with the win, and didn’t put Newton away until a goal with 10 minutes remaining.

“It was windy and I think that affected the play,” said Lynch. “Plus, they put a lot of defenders back. We had 20 shots, and nine shots on goal. We could have played better, but it was a win.”

Kurt Egbert had a goal and an assist, and Jordan Paul had the other goal, off Egbert’s assist.

The Trojans host New Knoxville Saturday.

Anna wins 11th

PITSBURG — The Anna girls won their 11th game of the season Tuesday, beating Franklin-Monroe 3-1.

The Lady Rockets are now 11-3 on the year and F-M 7-4.

Anna got the first goal with 12 minutes left in the first period when Amy Finkenbine scored from 40 yards out.

With four minutes to go in the first half, Nicole Schmidt blasted a shot in from 35 yards out.

Kyleigh Overbey capped the scoring with 33:15 left in the game, off an assist from Stacey Dodd.

Goaie Whitney Zumberger had 23 saves, giving her 720 for her career.
